Not for me, God is real for me.I find it ironic that, me, an atheist says, "Oh My God" constantly. For me, it is merely an expression, which happens to be an extremely common expression. If you have religious qualms about saying it, nobody is forcing you to say it. And since it is so common, I think the saying has lost all religious meaning.
Heard 'em both over my lifetime and have used both on many occasions.Instead of "Oh my God"...I wonder if "Holy mackerel would be ok?![]()
Much better.Maybe you could've told her you weren't saying "gee" but rather "jee"?
Yes, that's what I heard also from time spent with the Baptists. Any use of God's name other than prayer, really, is considered a sin.I take many art courses online and one artist instructor , is very nice, but a bit of a holy roller. And he doesn't get into an argument with you if you disagree with him, he just calmly discusses it. Others in the group can be vehement. He teaches portrait painting but he also quotes the bible online, etc. Anyways, there was something he posted about if you say, "Oh, my God", you are disrespecting God. I didn't get into it with him and others online, but I thought I'm sure God could not care less about this as long as you are not hurting anyone mentally/physically with your behaviour.
Probably would have made it worse with her, 'cause it started with a J......Maybe you could've told her you weren't saying "gee" but rather "jee"?
Very public. This particular teacher was worse than Sister Mary Attila the Nun. Occasionally on my graduating class Facebook page her name is mentioned and a collective shudder simultaneously occurs across the country.....Hope this was Not a public school!
It used to be a teenage girl thing. My students in the catholic school were always saying it. Another saying they used was "Swear to God", usually just before they told some lie to avoid being put on detention. It was a tell that alerted me to dig deeper for the truth.I never do but my daughter used to say this all the time when she was a teenager. Now, she is 36 and no longer uses this phrase.
I am quite aware of the commandment as I am Catholic. I just think it would be relevant if someone said F...you God but Oh, my God - I don't think anyone is breaking a commandment by saying Oh, my God.Read the third commandment in Exodus 20
It's pretty explicit
And a friend of mine says "crap on a cracker". So of course now I say that too.Had a friend once whose favorite swear was "Mohammad on a cracker". Interestingly, he was from Egypt.
