Do you say Oh, my God

I find it ironic that, me, an atheist says, "Oh My God" constantly. For me, it is merely an expression, which happens to be an extremely common expression. If you have religious qualms about saying it, nobody is forcing you to say it. And since it is so common, I think the saying has lost all religious meaning.
Not for me, God is real for me.
But each to his own I suppose.

I never do but my daughter used to say this all the time when she was a teenager. Now, she is 36 and no longer uses this phrase.

Sometimes when I have a really great idea I say to myself, "stop and think now!"
Then Ask yourself, "OMG WHAT HAVE I DONE? "..... :ROFLMAO: .....

I take many art courses online and one artist instructor , is very nice, but a bit of a holy roller. And he doesn't get into an argument with you if you disagree with him, he just calmly discusses it. Others in the group can be vehement. He teaches portrait painting but he also quotes the bible online, etc. Anyways, there was something he posted about if you say, "Oh, my God", you are disrespecting God. I didn't get into it with him and others online, but I thought I'm sure God could not care less about this as long as you are not hurting anyone mentally/physically with your behaviour.
Yes, that's what I heard also from time spent with the Baptists. Any use of God's name other than prayer, really, is considered a sin.

Maybe you could've told her you weren't saying "gee" but rather "jee"?
Probably would have made it worse with her, 'cause it started with a J......
Hope this was Not a public school!
Very public. This particular teacher was worse than Sister Mary Attila the Nun. Occasionally on my graduating class Facebook page her name is mentioned and a collective shudder simultaneously occurs across the country.....

Anecdote: I was raised in a home where God and Jesus' names were never, ever, ever taken in vain. Never. I had great parents but they were religious and that was one rule that was set in concrete.

After leaving home, I went over to the "dark side" a bit...LOL...and did say some things my mother wouldn't approve of.

Many years later, we are visiting for Easter and one of my sisters has given my 3-year-old daughter a big stuffed bunny rabbit. My daughter was trying to get the bunny to sit on a barstool but it kept falling off. Finally, she got fed up and exclaimed, "JESUS CHRIST!"

Needless to say, I was cringing for what was to come. My mom very sweetly asked my daughter, "Sweetie, is Jesus Christ the bunny's name?" My daughter: "I don't know, Nanny.....I just met him. I'll ask him if you want." Mom looks over at me and hisses, "We need to have a discussion about this." Kids.....they'll hang you every time.

I tried sincerely to watch my mouth after that.

It used to be a teenage girl thing. My students in the catholic school were always saying it. Another saying they used was "Swear to God", usually just before they told some lie to avoid being put on detention. It was a tell that alerted me to dig deeper for the truth.

I just find OMG, or the equivalent, is a lazy way to express astonishment.

Don't think I've said Oh my God. When something doesn't go right my typical way to express frustration is to say Aww SHI&

I really don’t hear deity references in cursing and expletives nearly as much as I used to when I was young. Perhaps such were considered stronger or more shocking back then. My parents were at best nominal Christians, but I can well remember my mother saying, “We don’t use that kind of language in this house!” One did not argue with my mother, or she would make you pay deeply in many prolonged ways…

When Rhett Butler said that he didn’t give a damn in Gone With The Wind, it was considered quite shocking back in the day. Today, we seem to walk instead through a minefield in which the F-bomb is slung constantly around… 🙀

The funny thing is that people who are not particularly religious will say Oh my God when something surprising or frightening happens. I've said it on occasion and never thought it was disrespectful. What I do think is extremely disrespectful is when people say Jesus F....ing Christ. I am now Muslim, but was raised Christian and remained so for more than half my life. As a member of the AME (Methodist) church and Muslim, we never worshipped Jesus as though he is God. We worship(ped) God, who the Bible says created heaven and earth.
