Do you think movie theaters will survive?

We used to go to the movies because that was the only source for the movie. For a long time that is no longer true. The virus crushed the movie theaters but it is not the only culprit. Unemployment, high prices of snacks and ever changing media options are also the barriers.

I don't know but my guess is no. A few such as the vintage ones might. I have not been to a movie theater for over 2 decades. Don't like them because of the people eating & drinking there & all the loud noise. Now, some of the locals have started selling booze. All I need is to have some drunk shouting next to me. I think Corvid-19 will certainly kill many of them. Of course, with ROKU & so many home options for movies, why go to a movie theater in the first place? At home I can pause any movie when I need to visit the "gentleman's room". Try that at your local movie theater & you might miss some exciting action. Perhaps for the young crowd, it would be OK. Not for this guy as I have moved on!
And I say, of course they will survive. The other pandemics came and went away and we have shots yearly for them too. So, this too shall pass and the people who love to date, go out and get a coke and popcorn and spend extra money on the one they are enthralled by , is just a way of life. The movie theatres have changed, gotten better-reclining chairs that hold a coke!

As far as I know the last pandemic was 100 years ago, are you talking about something more recent?

Good point, fmdog. We can't really compare the present time to previous epidemics (better word than pandemic for most of them) because in the past we didn't have Netflix, etc. There are many other ways now to watch a movie, many of them cheaper and more convenient than going to a theater.

But there is a socializing element also. Young people wanting an evening out with friends, couples who are dating, etc. can't quite get the same experience from Netflix. So maybe the theaters will find new ways to attract audiences in the future.

Those few people who chat during the movie spoil it for me. If only they’d wait until afterwards.

Back to the original question, no I don’t think movie theatres will last. All their profit is made in the sales at the concession stand. The ticket price covers the rental of the movie.

There are a few that absolutely must see the latest show as soon as it arrives.

The main reason I don’t think they’ll last is the quantity & quality of shows that we can watch for a pittance on our own large screens.

Watching the stock report this morning, every "movie-outlet" shown in the graph was in the green, stock price up. And yet also in the news this morning, AMC is filing for bankruptcy ....??

No, I'm afraid the theaters - at least as we know them now- will be a casualty of the pandemic. They were struggling before the pandemic hit and that will be the finishing blow.

My husband and I spent many a date night at the movies. We are sorry to see them go.

It's sad. and for the popcorn alone!
As a child, i always envisioned the movies to someday be 3D, with scents and sensations of wind and Sun; almost like a real experience.
almost multi-demensional. I guess change is inevitable, but the nostalgia lingers.

My hubby is the one that misses it more. A movie on the big screen just can't be beat and the seats are more comfortable and yes popcorn and drinks are pricey but it is somewhere to go to see a movie you are looking forward to.

Yes, I think some theatres will survive.

Wouldn't that be super cool? Do you remember "sensearound" spelling wrong. I think they tried to elevate the movie experience but never got to the point you are talking about.
