Do you want to be remembered by future generations?

Technology now makes it possible to record your history in detail. I had an aunt who said that we are just one generation from oblivion. Other than photos and correspondence and maybe some home movies this was true. Now, however you can provide extensive information about ourselves for posterity. I prefer not to bore the future with my past or philosophical musings, and welcome oblivion...

Good morning to all- this is an interesting discussion.
I fear that I will be remembered- to a certain extent- regardless of my wishes. One of the things about being a writer is that you are guaranteed a certain amount of remembrance as long as paper and print, and now, electronic storage devices exist. People may not know me, but they will know my name for a long time.
But the main reason I will be remembered- I was a teacher for nearly forty years.I stood before thousands of students, and some will recall me with fondness, some with indifference, a very few with unhappiness, but being a teacher means that you have a built-in remembrance factor.
So I don't worry much about being remembered- that's going to happen'

Hmm, you are obviously an optimist. You assume that people will read you, a big assumption as many famous writers are no longer read, unless as required reading. Further, your students will eventually pass and you will pass with them...

Ralphy- I am indeed an optimist- that's why I was a teacher. And as far as being read or not- that sort of thing takes care of itself.
And my students- some of whom are now teachers themselves- will pass on skills and techniques- and attitudes- that I taught them. That's the thing about being a teacher- your work and your efforts never die- they just keep being passed on to the next class of students.

I bought a camcorder when they first came onto the market...decades ago. Over the years, I have taken a large collection of videos of our kids, as they grew up, weddings, grandkids, and now great grandkids. I copied all the old VCR tapes to DVD's, and continue to take videos of family events. Sometimes, in the Winter, I put an old video on the TV, and it's quite interesting to see the family as it has evolved. Hopefully, when I pass, the kids will keep these DVD's and view them occasionally.

I'm sure many people remember teachers, I know I do. Some fondly, some I wonder why they chose teaching as a profession! Most were very dedicated and some even had a way of injecting humor into education. I'm sure most teachers could write a book about their experiences with their kids as they spend a lot of time with them.

Family might remember us, at least for a while. I have never done anything great or anything that made me infamous. Really.
I visit the cemetery at least several times a year and often look at the older monuments where they go untouched. Never any sign of visitors. They either have been forgotten or there no longer are any relatives either living or in the area. I have myself requested no funeral or headstone but I won't be here so why care what they do. I really don't expect to be remembered, but most people won't. I am no different than the millions of people who have visited this earth before me.
