Do you wash dishes as you go or leave the pile for later.

When I was young and single I used to pile used dishes in the sink until I ran out of plates or cutlery then I would wash them all.

Now I am old and once again single I wash everything in the sink after I have eaten I never leave things overnight because I am going to need them in the morning. Basically I use the same bowl, mug , plate, knife, fork, spoon every day, I just take them straight from the drying rack.

I clean as I go too, most going into the dishwasher and all pots and pans done by hand, sometimes at night I leave dirty dishes but in the mornings I clean the kitchen while I'm waiting for the coffee to brew.

For people that say they ā€œwash/clean as you goā€ do you actually mean you wash the preparation dishes and then sit down to eat? I saw someone do this.

While prepping food, I put what I can into the dishwasher. The rest get washed after the meal is finished.

If I'm cooking/baking that requires bowls, pans, etc. etc., I clean up as I go along..
If I'm simply zapping something in the microwave, I usually stash the plate/utensil in the refrigerator afterward til I have time to wash them. Weird habit, but a clean one! lol

I have a dishwasher, but have never used it. I don't see the purpose- a waste of time, water, electricity.

I put them in the dishwasher. It’s far more efficient in the use of water than my hand washing.

I hand wash some items that should not be put in the dishwasher, or that I only have one of and may need again before I run the dishwasher. I pile them in the sink and wash them when the pile gets too big or at least once a day, whichever occurs first. There aren’t many handwash items, so the pile is usally not that big.

I’m pretty sure my procedure reduces the amount of hot water consumed for washing dishes by at least 50%. Given the utility rates are going up in my area (another 12% as of January 1), it helps.

Yes I was surprised by how many folks here who presumably dont have many family creating dirty dishes use one, do you wait days till its full of dirty dishes or 'waste water' doing one or two? Now I try to be very efficient by stacking my son and I's dishes for several days until its 'worth while' filling the sink... LOL
Under this method one should fill the sink with VERY hot water and place dishes to soak until it cooled down enough to get ones hands in there (1/2 hr or more) by which time a quick wipe as you pull them out and into the dish rack and you are all done within 10 min!
This works better if you have a wide variety of pots ... or a dog thats good at cleaning them ....
Just kidding but it does help!!

I have a drawer dishwasher so it is about half of a regular size one - with 2 of us it fills up about every 3- 4 days. We do hand wash some things too, which we do daily.
