I guess 9-1-1 came into effect in 1968, and since then most people will dial 911 for any health emergencies (among others). Does anyone just call for an ambulance anymore, or does everyone use 911 when it's just a health-related emergency? http://www.ecso911.com/911begin.htm

My neighbors from South America thought that 911 ambulances was there for any and all medical issues. We watch as he would call when he got overheated, or his wife got a stomach. In one summer he had an ambulance in his driveway at least two or three times a week. We tried to explain that 911 ambulances for emergencies, but he showed us his government gold card for free medical services.
By fall he had received a letter about his misuse of emergency facilities. He was fined for$1'000. And told there would be a regular cost for ant further call outs. We haven't seen an ambulance at his house since.

Over here you ring 000 for emergency police, fire or ambulance.
I've called it for a fire in my kitchen and for an ambulance when my husband tried to suicide by taking an overdose of his medication.
Both times the response was timely and necessary.
If you only need ambulance transport I assume you look up a number in the phone book. I really don't know.
Perhaps that is why some people go straight to the emergency number - ignorance or confusion?

A lady I know called 911 because there were some bees outside of her house. I've heard stories on the news of people calling 911 for the correct time. Don't know if it's true, but they say someone called 911 because their French fries were cold at a fast food place.

The emergency number here for ambulance and Police is 999..and the NOn emergency number for police is 101
The 999 number gets all sorts of lunatics calling..
Here is an example..
Caller: Hi, I’m having a lot of difficulty breathing. My chest feels really tight and I feel very faint. I might be about to pass out.
Operator: Can you tell me where you are?
Caller: I’m at the pay phone on Steward Street.
Operator: OK sir, I’m sending an ambulance to you now. Do you have emphysema or asthma?
Caller: No.
Operator: So did the shortness of breath come on suddenly? Have you any idea what caused it?
Caller: Yes, I’m being chased by the police.
