I think of the one day at a time more along the lines of worry or fear of future events...Some things we worry about never happen and so to me the phrase means live this day and don't dwell on worries of tomorrow...I've never understood "taking one day at a time." Is there another option? It's like telling someone to "stand with the soles of your feet downward."
