For all you Downton Abbey fans and I know there's a few ( not me )... just to let you know , the Premier of ''A new Era''... will release in UK Cinemas on Friday night this week..29th ..of April, and will be released in theatres in the USA on May 20th...

My wife was "crazy" about this series and watched all the shows. Too bad she is gone! She loved fine clothes and dressing up and of course, this series has a lot of "fine" clothes to look at. What a contrast to the local "slob" wear that in style today.

Once in a while I will take a look at it just because it’s something different. There are no commercials on PBS and you can get into a story without the annoying interruptions. It seems that Americans are drawn to the British accent in the media. I even hear some commercials now spoken by Brits which have nothing to do with Britain.

yes sometimes we have that here..commercials being promoted by an American accent..

I watched it on Netflix and thought it rather good. Read a article, or perhaps it was a newscast that Queen Elizabeth is a fan and would look for things that were out of place. She identified a metal on a military uniform that was worn on the wrong side and it had not been issued yet, IIRC.

Years ago, people on the social networking site I was on (must've been Eons) were raving about Downtown Abbey so I decided to check it out...not expecting to like it. Well within a half hour, I was hooked! The acting is marvelous, I love Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess and I really got into the characters and their back stories. I actually want to watch the series finale again. I'm interested in seeing A New Era, but I won't go to the theater to do so, just wait until it's streaming. Here is one of the videos from Downton Abbey: A New Era Behind The Lens

For something different, I have been watching "Fawlty Towers." Many people don't know it but there are only 12 shows. It's so crazy I could not watch 2 of them back to back. John Cleese is totally nuts and so are most of the cast. Apparently, the man who played, "Manual", the waiter from Barcelona who has problems with English has died maybe 2 years ago. It certainly is different from Downton Abbey. Perhaps, "Mad as a Hatter" would describe it pretty well.

yes the fact that it was only 12 shows makes it really tedious to have them shown on constant repeat 45 years later... I know the scripts of all of them off by heart

It was actually based on a real character whom Connie Booth and John met in real life in some squalid B&B years before..

Connie ( who plays Polly the waitress).. was married to John Cleese at that time and they co-wrote the series..

Prunella Scales is now in her 80's with quite severe dementia... and her husband is Timothy West an acclaimed Film, TV and theatre actor.. a lovely man..

This was a lovely series they did together for TV.. with all their adventures on their canal boat sailing around the UK...

This is episode 1, of series 1... before Prunella was struck with Dementia.. and just to say ..even when she was eventually diagnosed she continued to sail. and Timothy taking care of her without ever being patronising in the later series .. is a joy to behold.. such a lovely couple... and TW is an acquaintance of my husband

Thank you Hollydolly for all that information. Sorry to hear about the dementia. Two members of my family, on my late wife's side, had demantia and I have read 5 books on demantia/Alzheimer's so I know how sad that disease is. I enjoyed the canal boat show. We used to spend a lot of time watching "Acorn" and "Brit Box" so did see many great shows from the UK but we have never seen the one on the canals. There is so much to see in the UK. One lifetime is just "the frosting on the cake." The trouble with many American tourists is that they spend a few days in London and they feel they have seen the Uk. Ha, ha! I tend to favour Cornwall. You could never see it all. Oh, let me put my 5 cents in for the "Doc Martin" series. My wife lived 20 years in Penzance and she loved watching Dr. Martin. The characters were great and so was the Cornish scenery. Thanks again!

..and the madness of it all with regard tourist who visit London and think they've seen the UK... is that London is probably the least like the rest of the UK as New York City would be.. so it's a real pity that people don't generally research the Uk before they visit, or they would visit Scotland or Ireland ..and outside of the cities ...or like you, visit the West coast of the country Devon and Cornwall ( I used to live on the borders of Devon and Cornwall).. ..to see the great forests and wonderful coastal areas we have here.. seems such a waste for them to come here at times and only see an overpriced City.. and go home thinking that's all there is to the UK...

I watched the first Series and got hooked but missed the first movie. So this is the 2nd movie? Have I missed anything else? Darn. I just don't watch TV or go to the cinema so I'm missing all the fun. But as a whole I don't think Netflix is worth my while. So are the movies on Netflix or in the theaters?

This new one has just premièred in London and will be in the USA in a month in theatres... soon after it will doubtless be available on Netflix...I don't know I don't watch it..

Oh you should watch it Holly. It's well written and good acting as well. You'd enjoy it.
that's exactly why I don't watch it because it's really not well acted nor is it historically accurate ..and anything like that drives me nuts, because I spend the whole time critiquing everything, so it's not enjoyable for me or anyone else ..

I see. Well I assumed it wasn't historically accurate since that's what the movie genre usually does. There're often loosely "based on a true story". But that's usually to add more interest than was already there. Plus they have to take years and smoosh it all into a couple of hours. As far as acting goes. Don't you like Maggie Smith? She's delightful I think.
