Driver licence renewal

Folks lose sight of the number of businesses struggling to maintain services with reduced staff members. I just called one the other day and the message was they have stopped taking calls all together!

My husband had such a difficult time. Firstly, they weren't answering their phones and secondly, they require a birth certificate. Hubby went after waiting so long and was turned away. They rescheduled his appointment for tomorrow. He was livid. He has never been asked for his birth certificate. He's been driving without a license since April!

What about car inspections? My car needs to be inspected this month but none of the filling stations where I do that have open for inspection signs anymore.

Do you need an appointment now for a car inspection? Also, I can't wear a mask due to a medical condition so will they refuse to inspect my car because of this?

I had my license renewed in December before the great pandemic began, and as I opted for the "real ID" license waited elbow-to-elbow in a crowded room for an hour and a half before I was served, seated right next to a guy who reeked of tobacco. Those cramped close quarters would be unthinkable now...

In the States we have to jump through hoops to get your license with the "star" on it in order to be able to travel by air. No problem if you're a male. You have had the same name all your life, most likely. If you're a woman, be prepared to show how you got from your maiden name to the name you currently have. Marriage licenses, divorce decrees, etc. OR provide a passport because you will have already done those things in order to obtain one.

Wow. Don't need that in California. A valid passport that matches my current name, plus a SS document (W-2 or 1099 from SSA), plus a couple of almost any kind of mailed proof of residence are sufficient.

This is for the REAL ID.
These are the same documents we need in Florida to apply initially or renew a license, for a real ID type. Additionally I had to provide a marriage license to account for a name change over the ( wayback) years. But we only have to do that one time, those records are kept on file and each license renewal is a "real ID type. My license expired last August ( 2019), and I was able to renew it online.

Got my State ID renewed this morning. Driver picked me up 8:00, I got home @10:30. Mask was removed for photo then you had to put it back on. So I can cross that task off my list.

Good grief! They don't use your past NM driver's license information as their basis for renewing? That's so odd.

No, because NM never required all that stuff before to get a license. So it's starting from scratch for everyone to get a REAL ID license. They'll renew your plain ol' drivers license without all that stuff.

I've been licensed to drive in this state for almost 60 years and I'm still struggling with DMV over the REAL ID thing, because one of my early documents from the 60s has been misplaced by the courthouse or clerk's office in another state and you have to have a certified copy.

I've about decided to just throw in the towel on the REAL ID because I'll probably never want to fly again anyway. Not having a REAL ID doesn't mean they consider you an alien, it just means you can't prove to their satisfaction the sequence of name changes. The whole stupid red tape thing makes my blood boil, though, because nobody questions that I was born in the US, or that I've been continuously licensed in this state, the first time being under my maiden name way back when (I always kept my NM drivers' license current even when we were in the army and stationed all over the place -- that's legal for servicemembers and their families), or that I've changed my name on my drivers' license and everything else as I went along. I just can't produce certified copies of a marriage certificate for a marriage that took place some 55+ years ago.

No, though I could have used one had I had it for my proof of citizenship. And if it had only my married name on it, I might not have also needed the marriage license, come to think of it. I used a certified copy of my birth certificate, which of course didn't have my married last name on it. So the name change on the other documents-well, they wanted a certified document for the name change. I did that renewal in person, but wasn't able to complete it without that marriage license. I had to return at a later time with the marriage license.

Don't you have a passport? If so, you can fly using that.
