There are many people here in Australia watching the midterms with keen interest. The very concept of midterm elections is alien to us, as are state elections with ballot proposals. Other things that we find peculiar is the idea of registering your party preference. It makes the idea of a secret ballot pretty meaningless. I guess if Spock and Kirk were Australians Spock would say "It's democracy, Jim, but not as we know it".
I realise that Americans don't understand how we can be comfortable with our system, but we are. Voting is very laid back here, without fretting about voter fraud or physical intimidation at the polls. Did I mention the sausage sizzles and cake stalls?
Few Americans vote a 'straight ticket', we frequently vote for candidates that are not in our particular political Party! Many Americans are independent voters, not registered as Republicans or Democrats. Regardless, being in a Party, does not in any way obligate us to vote in any particular way...
This is why I want there to be a "None of the above" box. If that is the high vote getter those candidates would be eliminated from the current election cycle. While I'm at it, 30 day campaign season start to finish-- period. Complete ban on phone calls from polling surveys of any kind.It seems, more and more, that voting is choosing the "Lesser of the Evils". I try to do a fair amount of research in the weeks leading to elections, and it's been a long time since I felt any "enthusiasm" for a candidate.
And that's the problem, people's approach to politics is like their sports team preference, emotional and frankly- shallow.I'm amazed that there are folks still interested in the "Election" at all. Since our previous president lost in his bid to stay in office, we've been bombarded with phoney claims regarding the illegitimacy of the elections.
Why have them at all? It's like the Saturday local high school football game. If you approach it withe the attitude of "If we win it's a hard fought victory" but if we lose, it's crooked officiating and we're not going to consider it a legitimate game?
Is that where we now stand. If "my team" wins, it's OK but if they lose, the game was "fixed". Do people really believe this BS ?
The voting box you are looking for 'is' titled "write in candidate"! Go for it...This is why I want there to be a "None of the above" box. If that is the high vote getter those candidates would be eliminated from the current election cycle. While I'm at it, 30 day campaign season start to finish-- period. Complete ban on phone calls from polling surveys of any kind.
So true, we saw petty and assholish in the 2016 debates and then the next 4 years was...is a matter of public record.Canadians realize if you're going to be petty and assholish in your election ads, then what will you be like when you get into power??
One positive outcome from the fraudulent claims made about the 2020 elections is the re-doubled efforts to provide proof-positive balloting security.Hope this helps for those who question the voting system.
Yep.You are in CO, right @SeniorBen?
What is that all about? This is not an issue in Australia. We still use paper ballots everywhere and scrutineers from political parties can keep an eye on the vote counting. Voting papers that are not filled in correctly are declared invalid and discarded. The scrutineers watch this process very carefully.
I find the election commercials so entertaining.I too am sick of the election commercials. Many years ago they used to have some integrity. All they do now is bash each other. I already voted by mail.
