Electric Driverless Car Crashes & Kills 2, Fire Burns For Hours

I hope the day, when "driverless" cars become commonplace, comes long after I stop driving. I can just imagine the number of accidents increasing as these types of vehicles have a software "glitch" or are hacked. I don't want to be around ANY vehicle that doesn't have an alert driver behind the steering wheel....dodging cell phone users, and drunks. is bad enough.

Insofar as electric cars igniting...these Lithium batteries that are being used are quite dangerous if they overheat or are damaged.

I wondered why my Honda Accord Hybrid has a big vent on the top of the dashboard. Probably keeps the battery pack cool.

I'm ok with the move towards electric or hydrogen driverless cars but the increased cost of car ownership will probably make it prohibitive for me and millions of others.

Driverless cars will most likely be relying on GPS navigation signals coming from sources such as satellites, or cell phone towers. If/when there is a momentary loss of signal, while the car/truck is moving at 60MPH, or more, the vehicle will not be able to recognize a curve, etc., and send the vehicle barreling off the highway, or into oncoming traffic. Then, it would only be a question of time before some "hacker" finds a way to intercept the GPS, and create a massive pileup. Nope, I wouldn't trust "technology" with my life.

ONE driverless car crashed. OOOOH, horrible. Two people were killed. When you consider that each day in the US, there are16,438 car accidents, and that each year, there are 16,438 deaths from car crashes. Even proportionally, the self driven cars have a much better driving record than humans. When you think of all the complex variables in driving, accidents will happen.

Yup. I have no problem with the driverless cars coming. I am continually frightened of all the people I see on the road talking on the phone. And we know that there are thousands of crashes a year for distracted driving of all kinds. Those are not 'accidents' --- we have far too many people that don't take driving seriously.

I would love to see this "Driverless Test" done in Florida. The Floridians will Know what I'm talking about. "Lovebugs".
Traveling down the interstate doing 70 MPH in a driverless vehicle. Then you hit a few large swarms of Lovebugs which looks like a black cloud because of the number of them. It's hard enough to see through the windshield after this. This would cover up all or most sensors on the outside of the vehicle. I wonder what would happen to the driverless vehicle?
Those that don't know what Lovebugs are:

Nasty insect that does harm to the paint job of your vehicle.

Yeah....not one incident but 24 incidents and the idea is to STAY BEHIND THE WHEEL when on "auto stupid"! Second safety issue with Tesla is the continuous burning while a driver may be attempting to exit. 34,000 gallons of water?! Yeah, no problem there.

Musk says , the 'auto-pilot' was not employed @ the time of the crash ?

Wonder if there was/is, a third guy they have not found ?

I think it's kind of weird that we expect perfection from a machine, which has to deal with all kinds of unforeseen variables, while we crash cars into walls on a daily basis. When you think of it, all accidents are caused by human error-speeding, driving too fast for conditions, not paying attention. But somehow, that's OK. Yet, put a self driving car on the road, and driving, all of a sudden becomes a "death trap". I'm not saying the cars do not need more development, but compared to humans, their driving record is much better.

From a CNN article yesterday

“can tell you our investigators are certain no one was in the driver's seat at the time of the crash," he told CNN Monday.
But later Monday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the "Autopilot" feature available on this car was not engaged, based upon "data logs recovered so far." He did not give details about what the data logs did in fact show, or if they ran up through the moment of the accident.
He also said an even more advanced self-driving feature known as Full Self-Driving capability, or FSD, that is available on a limited number of Tesla cars, had not been purchased with this vehicle.
"Moreover, standard Autopilot would require lane lines to turn on, which this street did not have,"

Quite a few oddities in this accident.

Yes, I looked in the owner's manual. It shows the whole ventilation system. There is a big air duct that goes from the dashboard to the battery pack under the rear seat, along with a fan.
