Even basic holidays are becoming expensive.

A few years ago I was considering an overnight trip to a place my family vacationed when I was a kid. I looked at B&B rates. One sounded good and the price on their website said $300. I thought that was for a week's stay. WRONG! That was for 1 day! I wouldn't be able to sleep if I knew I was paying that much for lodgings.
well that's the type of prices I was looking at last week, when looking for accomodation abroad... stupid prices for what amounts to nice but average accomodation.. £400 -£500 per person per night.. in a middle value hotel.. really.. not anything high class ... and I just refuse to pay it.. I wish more people would...

I'd just as soon sleep in my car in their car park than pay that kind of money ...lol

Australian dollars? So, like $125 - $142 in US dollars?, that sounds very reasonable, have you looked on Booking.com, you might find something in your range, especially if any hotel is having a special.
That is Booking.com prices. I have Genius level 3 status though I notice only those places at the higher end offer Genius Level 3 discounts. So still way too expensive for my liking.

When we went camping at both Yellowstone and the grand Tetons, the only Internet was by the office. Once you got in the campgrounds you didn’t have any so since we were there a week between the two campgrounds I just bought a bunch of books to read at night.

It’s interesting that now I have plenty of money to travel, but I’ve actually gotten sick of it. I’ve been to Europe six times so really don’t want to go again although my kids invited me to go with them in October for her parents wedding anniversary party.

I used to love going on cruises, but I’ve been on six of them and haven’t been able to get enthused about that either. Lately I’ve been looking at things within my own country that I would still like to see.

I think part of the problem is that flying has become such a miserable experience and we are so short of air traffic controllers that I don’t have a lot of faith in the safety of it either any more like I used to. There was recently a bill, but it didn’t pass to make air travel safer by not allowing the military to turn off their responders so civilian planes would know where they are. That was the reason for the crash over a year ago that was going from Wichita, Kansas to DC and everyone was killed.

They have shrunk the seats so much that it’s ridiculous and if you upgrade even in economy to a little more seating area, you pay double or triple the price which I am not willing to pay.
I agree 100%. Last month I returned from spending 38 days in Mexico (Mostly Yucatan). Had to listen to motorcycle noise 24 hours/day/night. Staying in "Boutique" hotels was terrible. They look good on "Booking.com" but the rooms were pretty bad.

I always wanted to go to Australia but research shows me that it is one of the most expensive countries in the world to visit and the restaurant service really "sucks."

Travel by air is a nightmare. They took away my toothpaste and I nearly got into a fight with some really awful "me generation" 20s women in the seat in front of me.

So now, I am staying home in good ole' Canada.

I think you're right to do that now , especially as you live in such a beautiful country, I'm sure you have places there that you've yet to visit.... If I lived in Canada I'd like to think I would be visiting many places..

I;d love to visit Australia, but I won't for the same reasons as you.. mainly because it's so expensive ...and yes as we've been saying air travel now is horrendous..no joy in it whasoever

I have family in Tasmania, but I'm not gonna visit and not just because it's too expensive. All these scary animals they have there. No thanks. I have been to Canada. Saw the Niagara falls.

I have a very good friend who lives in Tasmania..in Devonport... but unless I win the lottery I won't ever be going there...

I've never been to Canada, I have relatives in Toronto, ..my daughter has been to Canada on a lot of occasions. She use to be an executive for a multinational company and at one time before Zoom became a thing, she had to fly out once a month to Toronto to Chair meetings... ..she hated it...

It's funny because I've always thought I;d love to visit Canada, and 've never been but both my husband who worked for 6 months at Banff..Lake Louise ..and my daughter, both hated Canada...

MY Daughter has travelled to Australia twice.. to South Africa once.. to Dubai twice.. to the USA...5 times.. (New York city and California)...to Switzerland, To Greece, to Spain... to Cyprus, To Turkey... , so she's fairly wideley travelled.... ..but she really disliked Toronto...

Oh I loved it, especially the Niagara falls, but in the winter it was very cold. I wore a ski suit, snowboots and long thermal underwear in the mall even LOL and saw girls who lived there walk with high heels, open shoes and one guy wore shorts.

That's because people acclimatize..... it was the same when I lived in Spain.. we'd be cold in winter and be wrapped in coats when it was 68 deg because we were used to 90 deg ... and tourists would come over and be walking around in shorts, and t shirts..

When I was working, I traveled a lot and for years after I retired, I could still use air miles and hotel loyalty points to reduce the cost of holidays. Now I am running out of points and like others, I am finding the cost of accommodation and travel a tad too expensive in some places.

As some of you may know, we have a campervan that we use for touring the UK. This used to be a cheap holiday, costing a few pounds per night. Now, there are few basic sites and many camp sites offer almost as much as a hotel. Prices can be around £30 a night and over twice that in high season. OK, that's a lot cheaper than a hotel, but campervans, RV's etc. have also shot up in price.
What about country houses bed and breakfast deals? Are these still available?
