Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law

Good point, Pepper. Maybe it's something in the water. The northern liberals move to Florida, and something mysteriously happens to their brain, to put it back into the 14th century.

The essence of the law would be that if anyone witnessed a store or similar business being looted, they may shoot the looters. If passed, this may be looked at as Vigilante Justice.

Good idea or bad idea?
Terrible idea

If someone enters my yard, with the intent of harm or theft, they're mine

Looters of stores?
They're somebody else's

That legislation is asking for something far worse than looting

When I saw this OP, the first thing that came to my mind was "is this true". Indeed, it appears to be.............

https://www.nydailynews.com/news/na...0201111-2lntkavopbaajfmho5l2lm6egu-story.html

I am fully in favor of "stand your ground" if some fool is trying to break into a home, etc., but to allow "vigilantes" to randomly shoot looters is really pushing the limits, IMO. About the only way I could support that would be if the armed owner of a small business was inside while some looter was breaking into his store.

The article leaves out that it’s a draft, not filed. I don’t doubt the intent, but I remain in the dark about wording until I see the actual bill.

For those who think this ridiculous idea is justified, just think for a moment of what would probably ensue. How could someone standing out in the street during a demonstration of civil unrest, with their itchy trigger finger poised and ready, possibly know for sure who are the looters, and who are their friends, observers, people who just came along for the ride, people who are committed to the principles of the demonstration but are not in favor of looting, people of the "wrong" race who are just passing by, maybe some of them are just kids who are curious, and so on?

The racists in the White Supremacy group, who would probably make up the bulk of the shooters, wouldn't know, and wouldn't care. Hail, Nazi Germany.

And on top of all that, of course looting is not a crime punishable by death. Even if it were, in a civilized society, that death sentence would not be carried out by instant execution by some vigilante.

Is the governor of Florida unaware that we have police, and a justice system to deal with crimes? Or doesn't he care?

It's never okay to kill. It destroys not only the one who is being killed and their families, but those who do it and their families. Yes, we need police to protect us and to do so, they may need to use their guns, but that does not make it okay. The world has always been this way. It's not really a recent phenomenon. There are just more of us now and more media coverage, so we are more aware of it. When rats are overcrowded they become carnivorous. Collectively, we are those rats.

Have you seen the bill?
I am not sure if the bill has been presented yet, but the Governor is the one sponsoring it. This is just crazy. Not even the police are trained to do that. When we are called out for looting, we have a set of procedures we follow and one of them is not to jump out of your vehicle with pistol in hand and shooting your way into the store. Unless the looter or looters have a weapon in their hand, we give them an opportunity to surrender peaceably. And of course, we do carry a Taser, which isn't always effective, but it does tend to get one's attention.

If I came across someone looting a store, what would I shoot them with. I've said before, I own a couple of guns (so don't mix me in with non-gun owners) but never carry them about in my daily activities. Some folks must live in terrible areas to have the need to be constantly "on the alert" in order to ward off attackers.

How many of us have been attacked this week? Houses broken into? Out buildings looted? I just went for an inspection sticker for my car. Should I have been armed? You'd think so from reading some of the posts.

I guess some live in crappy locations but I hate to think that so many of us live in constant fear??

Dave. Your post is most refreshing, thank you for it. :)

No one has the right to cause another person financial ruin. To me it is trespassing for one and in terms of finance it is in effect robbing another person so as rgp has stated above loot at your own risk.

A lot of folks on this forum who reside in the USofA, sure have me convinced that a thief, a criminal, a mugger, a rapist, a murderer, a bank robber, a monster, and a blood-thirsty zombie, ALL await them on every street corner, at the entrance of their homes, hiding in the back seats of their vehicles, and lurking under their beds. ROFLMAO!

The governments in states like Florida, are causing a lot of economic problems with policies like that. People are afraid to go there. These states have some crazy idea that these laws make their states safer, but those in other states fear them. Many are avoiding these states for new businesses and vacations. I've lost count of how many times, over the decades, I've heard someone say that the people in Florida are crazy. There's a reason for that.

I'm ashamed of the following fact which obviously is the wrong answer to our problems:
In September 2013, the incarceration rate of the United States of America was the highest in the world at 716 per 100,000 of the national population. While the United States represents about 4.4 percent of the world's population, it houses around 22 percent of the world's prisoners. wikpedia

Maybe when sea levels rise a little more it will help flush out all of the bad guys from the State of Florida, and birdbrain law-makers will no longer need to look at introducing such numbskull bills.
