Flying the Flag for Memorial Day

ummmmm - because it is irrational, emotive, brainwashed nonsense.

There are far, far better places to live than the Grand Ole USA - even IF one were able to choose their country of birth and hence their conditioning since childhood.

Pride ? About what - warmongering, drug-ridden, gun-crazy, historically racist, violent, polluting, materialistic, bullying, ignorant .................... ?

Only when the world rids itself of this silly parochial nationalism will there ever be even a glimmer of hope for peace.

But relax, my rant is not anti-Yank. It applies equally to any nutter who thinks their country is the best simply because they were born in it - or chose it.

I started this thread to ask how folks displayed their flag for Memorial Day, since many HOAs have restrictions. I couldn't have imagined that anyone would try to turn it into an anti-American screed. Please start your own thread, but please remember we do not discuss politics on SF.

It's not Memorial Day, but today is Flag Day and we PROUDLY have all four of our U.S. Flags sticking in the ground in the front of our apartment. I just happen to look at our local news app's weather info and found out Flag Day is today. So, grabbed the flags and put them out.

Happy Flag Day!

And a happy Flag Day to you too, Sarah !:biggrin-new:

Not a matter of 'trolling'. Just expressing a personal view about such stuff.
Sorry.

Gloating about something over which I had no control and going along with the herd is not my 'thing', that's all.
Each to his or her own.
Whatever floats ya boat.

My flag stays folded up in the bronze case, because it draped my dad's casket. I'm proud of that flag :)

Back to the subject ... I heard that HOA's are are very picky about "decorations" . Change the word Picky to Crazy from some of the stories I've heard ! Can it be hung in the inside of a window ?

Usually, the Best way to get rid of one of these "trolls" is to Not respond to his/her posts. Let them spout their nonsense, and when no one will "encourage" them, they usually fade away.

Sorry, but I am a proud American and I don't give a pass to a slur on my country. If Aussies want to wipe their feet on their flag, by all means, have at it.

Good news! 4th of July is next week. Since I’m in Ohio with my S.O. I can fly her flag with reckless abandon. A lot of people already have red/white/blue bunting displayed. And if you are near Columbus try to go to “Red, White, and Boom”. Huge fireworks display. 600k folks having fun 👍

Toor….(You could just as easily have been born North Korean, Iranian, Chinese or Israeli - all of whom claim similar brainwashed 'pride') No, I could not be able to be born Noth Korean, Iranian, Chinese or
Israel....All my ancestors came from Italy....Many Many years ago....I am 4th generation....I was born in America, My husband was born in America... so was my Mom & Dad, And so was my husband's
parents born in America....And I was never brainwashed....My father, his brother's, my cousins, fought in the wars...."We are proud to be an American"....My Dad's friend's wife was born in Japan...
She met her husband over seas, came to America and waited for a long time to become an American Citizen....

I don't know where you are from, but maybe you should not spout in the forum such garbage.....

Perhaps this is naive, but it really is a serious question. Is the "objection" to flying flags from the HOA's due to the symbolic significance of the flag? Or do they object to any and all flags?

There are many decorative flags that people like to fly; I think they are lovely. Some have particular breeds of dogs, some have flowers, trees, butterflies, abstract patterns, whatever. So, do the HOA's
also object to those?

I live in a high rise, so this is not an issue. Our club house has a beautiful Veteran's Park in front, with plantings, a fountain, and the U.S. and Maryland flags flying every day. On patriotic holidays, there is usually a
ceremony honoring the veterans. Since this is a retirement community, there are a (sadly declining) number of WW2 veterans, and many of the Korean and Viet Nam wars. I've never heard any objection to honoring
them. Obviously, attending any of these events is strictly optional. We have a fun parade on the Fourth of July around that park, lots of antique cars and representatives of our many activities parading in costume. I'm not
going this year, as it's just too hot. But I've gone in the past; the parade has no political connotation at all. It's just Americans having fun being Americans. When there is a tragedy in the news, the flags are flown at half mast. Lately, that has happened very often, sad to say.

I do think it's possible to honor veterans, and express love for our country by flying the flag, without becoming overbearing or obnoxious about it. So, what's the problem?

We have some interesting takes on flag flying in OZ, which perhaps some of my OZ comrades here may comment on. I have never flown a flag anyway - don't feel the need but can see no problem with others almost! and I am sure we have a similar thing to HOA over here that might object to flag flying. the main issues I see here are we are often cited as 'the most successful multicultural country in the world'. So flying a flag for war veterans of say the Vietnam war could be seen as a problem by our large Vietnamese popn; alathough all usually become citizens and are required to swear allegiance to the ozzie flag and queen of UK [which can another sore point!] we have royalists and none royalists as they do in UK. So flag and the flying therefore often mean very emotional things to people and opposing flag flying can produce emotional friction!
you may also no doubt have heard of some issues that have sprung up with our 'First Nation peoples' ; the traditional owners of the land as there is in USA and CA. Our Indingenous folk have their own flag

oops came out a bit big! - each state in OZ also have their own flag. So flags are numerous and may cause some friction with some members of our society. I do believe that the Aboriginal flag flies at parliament house alongside the ozzie flag - but don't quote me on that yet I could be wrong!

I personally have no problem with any other national group in OZ flying their own flag ; I think they all look colorful but they are a focus of pride and can stir up emotions! - but heh let's share and above all else recognize our First Nations peoples for their histories and the difficulties that some still experience adapting to other western living as we sometimes call it! :love_heart:

In America we are considered to be "United" as one...thus we are the United States. There is only one flag, the American Flag, that citizens of the United States

pledge their allegiance to.

Theodore Roosevelt said,

"There can be no divided allegiance here.
Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all.
We have room for but one flag, the American flag."

Each Canadian province and territory has its own flag, but we all come together under the Maple Leaf. I have never seen any signs of conflict under our system.
