Giving UP On Facebook

I use it everyday. It's great for business people. I've had lots of old friends and neighbors reconnect with me though FB. It's also great for getting instant news of family in areas of natural disasters and weather woes. I rarely unfriend anyone, just unfollow, unless someone sends me obscene pictures in private messages. Then it's unfriend and block. One person criticized everything I put up on FB so I did unfriend him. FB is okay with me. I like it more than I find it problematic. :sentimental:

The problem with facebook and the internet in general, is that it gives people a soapbox that they wouldn't normally have. There are quite a few people that mistakingly feel their message is important and must be heard.

This post is so spot-on.

I don't have a FB account and I don't plan to get one. I tried it a few years back with a "nom de plume" and immediately knew I wasn't a good fit for Selfie Land.

I strongly dislike FB, getting back on, only recently, to promote my company. I can't see that I'm getting any business from FB, although they're charging me, daily. I will, most likely, be off of the service in the next sixty days.

Never joined facebook, don't intend to. Had a look around at my relative's page and wasn't impressed, I imagine it's good for keeping up with relatives and friends but I've heard too many negative things about it.

I love Facebook and go there often. I have my Facebook wall set the way I want it. One example is our local TV news stations were posting things I didn't want to see so I set it to where I will see no child or animal abuse photos. All my friends or relatives who like to post about politics I have put on "unfollow" so I can't see them. Things I am interested in I see a lot of and things I don't care for I don't see.

I am in humor, spiritual, cute animal videos, food, local buy and sell and positive thinking groups on Facebook. As far a food goes, if one of my friends visits another country and doesn't post photos of the food they are eating I get in quite a snit! If I hadn't been on Facebook a couple years ago my long lost grandson wouldn't have found our family.

You can find what you are interested in on Facebook. If you are into conspiracy theories, Viking history or the latest make up tips you can get your fill on Facebook. And the best thing of all is, if you don't like it, no one is making you spend time on there. Or at lest I hope no one is.

Right now I'm not at home, I'm in southern California, but I was able to see photos my neighbors posted of an ice storm and even a bit of snow near my house a couple days ago. Every morning now I look to see what's went on in my neck of the crazy mountain I live on. A couple days ago I saw a warning and photo about a 17 year old girl who had given her step mom a severe beating and took off down the road. I had never seen the girl and didn't know her name but the 2 roads intersecting where it happened is about 1/4 mile from my house. I like to keep up on this type of news.

Don, God bless your heart, you've posted on here almost 5,000 times, and yes, this is "social media". :)

Yes, I suppose this forum could be loosely described as "social media", but my feelings extend more to those who spend hundreds of dollars on a smart phone, then spend the bulk of their day glued to things like Facebook and Twitter. I check into this, and a couple of other online forums 2 or 3 times a day, for a few minutes at a time...mostly as a short break between various projects I'm usually doing. Primarily, I like this forum as it offers some insight into how others are handling retirement, and their "golden years". I've picked up a few valuable ideas, and hopefully offered others a pertinent tip on things I've experienced.

The thing about FB is the business model. People are enticed to reveal all kinds of information about themselves. Plus FB uses all kinds of covert devices to elicit unauthorized data.(All be it Terms of Service embedded authorization.) All that data is up for sale with no questions asked. So is FB a social instrument, or data collection service?

I agree! I have been using this extension for a few years and love it!!!! It lets me have more control of what I want to see and what I don't want to see.

I'm much as you describe here, because the bulk of my friends and family are on facebook, twitter, instagram and other private forums and groups, as well as email, messenger and text. I am "glued" to all of that, because I able to stay in close touch with all the people I care about that way.

You could also say I am "glued" to my phone apps. My Notes app allows me to keep a close track of the various projects that are ongoing with clients, with attendant links, lists and billing information. My Reminders app alerts me to appointments, things I need to do, time sensitive issues etc. My Calendar app sends me concise list of everything I have scheduled for that day, both business and personal, and alerts me a week ahead when a birthday is coming up, or a bill needs to be paid etc. Every time I think of something I need to pick up at the grocery store, I add it to my my Grocery List app so I don't forget.

I shop online to save time, and whenever I think of something I need, or come across something I have to purchase for a client, my Amazon app is right there, and with a few clicks it's ordered and on its way to me with delivery usually in 2 days because I'm a Prime Member. I often need to research things for clients, and I have Safari right there as my go-to browser. Don't need to carry a calculator because it's on my phone, nor a flashlight because it has a powerful one built in. Weather app alerts me to emergency weather conditions, flash flood warnings, tornado warnings. My phone also sends me Amber Alerts when a child goes missing. I can deposit my checks through my Banking App with its scan feature, transfer funds between accounts, pay for items with a swipe of my phone. My clients can pay me by sending money to me through Venmo or PayPal. I keep track of my blood donations (I have a rare blood type so I'm conscientious about donating regularly) through my Blood Donor App, My TelaDoc app allows me to schedule a doctor's visit virtually, with a video call, for those pesky illnesses that come up and I don't want to waste the time going to a brick and mortar facility. My Library app gives me books to read or listen to right there at my fingertips.

I'm sure your eyes crossed and you stopped reading a while back  but I could go on for another two paragraphs about the 30 or so other apps that I use regularly, all of which make my life easier, save time, create efficiency, or are just plain fun for those times when I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for someone or something.

So, yeah, I'm "glued" to my phone all right!

I use FB mostly to keep up with the kids, grandkids...etc...Don't post a lot but if I find a funny meme I'm all in.

There's some funny stuff out there....

I don't find it necessary to post that I got up and brushed my teeth today, with a purple tooth brush or what type of toothpaste I used.....

I too gave up on Facebook. Was too much fake stuff, and got scammed on it. So have given it up. My wife still checks it out now and then, and tells me or shows me things I might have interest. Miss communicating with some Friends, but don't miss the Bull that goes on with it...

Yeah, we're social media, but we don't as a general rule post personal pictures and we do not give out personal information. A neighbor of mine who was much enamored of Facebook and posting every little thing she did posted to her page that they were going on a trip and how long they would be gone, etc., and guess what happened while they were gone? Yup, they got burgled.

.

I signed up years ago... but hardly ever used it. It was boring.

I much prefer posting on different forums where other posters shared my interests.

I use FB but am cautious. I don't like when my FB Friends get nasty either and sometimes I will "unfollow" them rather than "unfriend". That way they are still a friend but I figure they are going through a goofy period. . About a month later I will often follow them again to see if things got any better with their postings. I mainly go on there to keep contact with some friends, and family. I also have had to let some of them (but not my family) go because of too much shenanigans going on with them that I could not take any longer
