WASHINGTON — More than 100 goats are taking over Washington's Historic Congressional Cemetery to help clean up the landmark.

The cemetery welcomed the grazing herd Wednesday. The goats will graze 24 hours a day for six days to eliminate vines, poison ivy and weeds, while also "fertilizing the ground."

The livestock will be penned outside of the burial areas. The cemetery is open from dawn to dusk.

The cemetery says the use of goats will eliminate the need for harmful herbicides and will keep invasive species from killing large trees.

The Congressional Cemetery was founded in the early 1800s and covers 35 acres on Capitol Hill. Thousands of people are buried at the cemetery, including former senators and House members.

What a great idea .. I just love goats.. expecially the baby ones so cute..

There's all kinds of portable electric fence rigouts that'd work. But they'd be too terrified that some moron might touch it and sue them to risk it. Not all goats have 4 legs.

A relative was thinking about borrowing a herd of goats to eat out the patch that the Greenies on the council won't let him clear to reduce the fire risk. Sounds a good idea.

As a little kid, had about half a dozen goats on my grandfathers farm. Loved their curiosity and their sweetness..
Wherever they were, no lawnmower was needed.

They are very intelligent animals, but sometimes you gotta wonder because they will eat anything at all.
Clothing tastes just as good as grass to them. And grabbing hair from your head, or a camera in your hand tastes great too.

I think it's cruelty to animals that this is taking place - subjecting those poor goats to the ghosts of such hardened criminals ...

Yeah, now everybody will go "Oh, Phil, that's terrible - how could you SAY such a thing?!?". I can say it because I firmly believe that to achieve the level of Senator or House Member you had to have lied, cheated and stolen far more than any inmate serving time in a Federal pen. You don't get to the top of the political game by being an honest, loving, righteous person - you get there by manipulation and scheming.

I saw that on the news, I love goats too, they're so cute and sweet looking. Never was around any on a farm or ranch though. Noticed there's been some on TV commercials, I really like to see them. :love_heart: Phil, you get what you give...now the goats are 'fertilizing' on them, like they did on others in their day. :p

There were pygmy goats when I was living at the vineyard. They were so sweet and did a pretty good job trimming the vines after the grapes were in the vats.

Guess all that crowd is part of the experience. Hope they enjoy the show.

Speaking of Congress, weeds and goats....

While still digesting the information about, the new to me, Walking Horse, I just learned that Tennessee has also gifted the world with ... the Tennessee Fainting Goat! I've spent more than a few guilty moments of laughing hard at these little cuties for a while now, but just learned where they sprang from. mmmmm, somethin' going on around there?

Anyway, they'd be spooky enough to turn loose in a politician's cemetary, kind of fitting really, their voters have been having that reaction to them in this world.

Michael that video is amazing .. I never knew they climbed trees like that but over in that
country I guess they climb the mountains so that is easy for them.. we had goats and also
on our 5 acres which they cleaned up a bit at a time we didn`t have the whole acres separated into
paddocks so we put up a portable removable fence put a trough in for water and also the 5 goats we had
and let them clean up that area before moving them to another area.. took time but over 6 months we had
the lantana and all high grasses chewed down and of course fertilized so Frank would come along
with his Ferguson tractor and cultivate that area , when we moved them to another area..
grew nice veggies and flowers . and sold them up the road , I wasn`t working then and Frank was
working at the local hospital so it was a hobby for me too as well as look after the animals..
Ahh ! those were the days.. That Guy,., wow a goat riding a surf board !!:goodone::lol:
