I've been browsing here for a bit so thought I'd post an intro. I'm newly retired, just turned 66 last month. I spend too much time, according to my wife, on a rowdy, redneck drag racing forum, but they have an addictive politics section.

I used to do competitive shooting decades ago. just renewed some NRA certifications for Pistol and Home Firearm Safety and hope I can get some part time work at a new indoor range opening nearby. I will get my Range Safety Officer certification shortly.

I'm also trying to get back into reloading, specifically for long range shooting. In short, now that I have time to burn, I'm hoping to get in gear with some of my previous hobbies...too old & decrepit now for martial arts (back is a train wreck). I also used to do a lot of photography, both for work at one time and as a hobby. Most of my working life was spent selling microscopy and digital imaging systems to life science research labs.

One other interest is cars. My wife and I go to a lot of local cruise-ins and car shows with our 1999 Panoz AIV roadster. We also have 4 Maine Coon cats that are a joy and a riot. However, we probably won't be out much this summer for anything since my wife is getting ready to start chemotherapy. If any women here have been through this, I would appreciate hearing about suggestions you have on how I might make this easier for her, and how to keep her eating, etc.

My thoughts and prayers are with your wife RC and here is some info I hope is helpful for her:

Concerning eating:

  • Drink calories. This is for patients who are struggling to meet their daily goal for calories and protein, not for those who are tolerating their treatment and are not losing weight. The best option: smoothies made with plain yogurt and berries, low fat milk, and drinkable yogurt.
  • Choose foods with sauces and gravies, which are easier to swallow than dry foods.
  • Avoid meat that must be chewed vigorously. Shredded meat is easier to eat. Egg salad is another protein source that patients seem to like and that doesn't require much chewing.
  • Serve food cold or at room temperature to cut down on their odors, which often can trigger nausea or loss of appetite; cold cereal or cheese and crackers are good choices.
  • Eat out of doors if possible. Food odors are less strong in the fresh air.
  • Instead of three major meals, have four to six smaller meals per day.
  • Combat nausea with ginger in capsule form or as ginger tea or ginger beer.
  • Nuts are usually well tolerated, and they're high in healthy calories.
I hope these suggestions are helpful, and I strongly recommend seeking out a dietician who can assist in structuring an eating plan based on food preferences and the potential side effects of her treatment.

Gael, great info! Thank you! One other woman, a breast cancer survivor, had mentioned smoothies and we had been looking at recipes and premade. But I had not heard some of your other suggestions. Thanks again.

Welcome RC, I think you will really like it here;) I've just been here about a month now, and always something going on;) Denise

HI New member,
I spent many years in Md . Not sure where New Market is. I lived in Laurel, College Park and Lanham over about 12 years when I worked at NSA and then later spent a few years in Gaithersburg, and while there I would go to a shooting range in Fredricksburg.

I started my hobby of writing and selling software for gun collectors there and used to go to all the gun shows in the MD and VA area. I also wrote s/w for car collectors- see www.gastonco.com for more info.

Welcome to the group- sounds like you will have great stories to tell. GerryG

Welcome to the forum RCynic.......I also wish your wife all the best....:rose:

Hey Puzzler, very cool. New Market is near Frederick, Md, which is about 40 miles NW of both Baltimore and DC. I like Frederick, it's close enough to easily visit the two big cities if I should want, but far enough away to have it's own distinct identity. I'll check out your link shortly.

...and the others of you who have said so, thank you for the well wishes for my wife.

Hi RCynic,
I mispoke earlier when I said I regularly went to a shooting range in Fredricksburg, I meant to say Frederick, which of course was just a short hop from Gaithersburg,. This was back in the 90's. The range is probably not there now- they were having problems with developers encroaching on their open land even though there was also a separate range there used by police forces. And, of course, cities usually side with the developers !!!! GerryG

No problem. I think I know the range you mean, it's just off Linganore Rd. I can often hear the gunfire from our house if the wind is right. It's called the CRESAP range, now. Just to the right of it is the Monocacy Pistol Club and to the left of it is the county police range. A developer did build very close to it but kindly offered to move it to a more agreeable location (it's current location, a few hundred yards away with berms not visible to that new community). CRESAP is only open on Sundays now because of vounteer staffing difficulties (it's a public range) but it is jammed when it's open, often requiring waiting in line for a firing lane. I expect the new indoor range that's opening in a few months to alleviate some of that.

Cities in Maryland usually aren't very sympathetic to shooters but that was one thing I liked about Frederick County. Even now it still doesn't buy into Maryland politics, thank goodness (Frederick is one of 5 western maryland counties pursuing secession legislation). In fact, when I was at a hearing about the new indoor range, one of the owners of the new range said they became aware of another application for a second indoor shooting range by another group, maybe two more years down the road.

Hi RCynic,
That is the same range- I recognize the name !!! Glad to hear it is still going strong. So glad to hear "(Frederick is one of 5 western maryland counties pursuing secession legislation)". I'm glad all of MD has not succumbed to the deterioration that emigrants from NE D.C caused to College Park and Prince Georges county which used to be my home. I saw the same problem happen to North Baltimore where my second wife lived near the Colt Stadium. How sad !!! When I first came to MD in '58 I thought it was a wonderful area. Best of luck with the secession movement. Best political news I have heard in a long time. Now if the states would just disregard the edicts of our dictator and do what is best for the local folks!!!
