Guest Towels?

Okay, I've been fortunate enough to have been married to two wonderful ladies for a total of over 50 years. However there is one thing (actually, a lot more than 1 thing, but I digress) I just don't understand: "Guest towels".

These are apparently totally off limits for husbands and children. They take up limited/critical space on the towel bars, but can not be used for their intended purpose. As we say here in Hawaii, they are Kapu. Forbidden. Off Limits. Taboo.

Ladies - can you please explain this to me? Be gentle.

Mahalo.

I just grab one from the linen cupboard when needed.
Although mine aren't really guest towels.
They are just clean hand towels.

We always like to present our best to company, hence clean perfect guest towels. That's all. It shouldn't be a biggie. Isn't this sort of from a bye gone era?

Still pretty much standard practice with us.

If it's am overnight guest a towel is left on the foot of the bed, for an expected short term visitor one is placed in the bathroom, and if the guest is just a "drop in" but needs to use the bathroom you go and get them a fresh towel.

If the visitor is a doctor or nurse (on business) you also provide a pristine tablet of soap.

I have some small embroidered towels for guests but don't usually have guests so I put them away and can't find them. They are old and worn, too. You gave me a good idea to get some nice guest towels should I have company. They would be exclusively for guests; for them to have fresh towels.

I only use guest towels if we actually have a visitor. Otherwise they stay in the towel cupboard.

I would however like to debate men and toilet seats. A phenomenon I have never understood

Mahalo for your responses. But here's the thing - the guests never use the guest towels either. They (at least the women) say "oh no, they're too pretty to use. Just get me one of your old ones."

I suppose this is from a bye-gone era, but I'm 70 & so am I...

I've got guest towels in my bathroom, they're on a little hook which says:guests:)because I would'nt like others to use my own towel.
I'll put a fresh one there if it's been used once. They're easily washed and dried,as they're small.

My ex and I broke up 16 years ago. To this day, I have yellow guest towels in my bathroom. I wash them every year or so, since nobody ever uses them. Apparently, if guests did not have their very own towels; the universe would explode into a massive fiery ball; or at least, before she left, into a massive fight. So, I guess to protect the universe, I still have guest towels nobody uses.

I have a couple squirreled away in the bottom of the linen closet that belonged to my mother. I've gradually used most of the small dainty ones that she had as dresser scarves, antimacassars, etc...

If I'm having company, which is rare, I put out a supply of fresh clean presentable towels in the bathroom after I've gotten cleaned up.

If someone just appears and needs to use the bathroom they use what they find. Sometimes the best option would be drying their hands on their shirt or jeans, LOL!!!

I have many of them. I put them out for guests as well. My aunt had a beautiful way of folding them with a pleat and draped them over the bath towels. After seeing that I think the guests dried their hands on the bathroom rug because they didn't want to disturb the towel creation. I remember as a kid wiping my hands dry on my clothes for just that reason. If I have company who stay over I provide them with bath towels and wash clothes. Some of the plainer guest towels that have never been used I re purposed for kitchen towels for daily use. I know I'll never be able to use them all as guest towels.

I used to put out fancy guest towels when I had company. Then I found out that the guests did not use them because they were so pretty! I don't have guest towels anymore. :p

As a guest, honestly I hate using overly fancy guest towels in someone's home. They don't dry my hands well when they're covered with lace, ribbons, ruffles and other things stuck onto them. All I want is a clean, unstained towel and my guests get the same.

My guest towels are put away neatly in a space bag. I very rarely have guests but when I do, I want to make sure they have clean towels and wash cloths. Towels that sit out for a long time will be full of dust and germs, especially if they are in a bathroom where the toilet gets flushed without the lid being down. I have seen on T.V. and read that toilet germs can spray out up to six feet in the bathroom. For this reason, no toothbrushes should be exposed either. Imagine...yuk! Anyway, I digressed too. It's best to flush with the lid down and not leave towels that will not be used, perhaps for weeks or months, in the bathroom.

My guest towels aren't really for the guest, (they're decor), that's what my paper towels or other folded napkins are for. :D I too don't particularly care to use peoples guest towels, who knows how many hands used them prior to mine. I mean how many people replace the hand towels after every person goes in there really, I rather have a use a trow-away, more sanitary. Now if we're talking for someone with a overnight guest using a private area bathroom, that's different.
