Gunmen open fire at Bondi Beach in Sydney.

It seems to never end. The news programs on TV have to use a split screen to show yesterday's two mass shootings at the same time!

I'm hoping that at least one or two of the gunmen who were shot will survive - not because they deserve to, but interviewing and studying them might give us some valuable tips on how to prevent more of these mass murders. Of course, the prevalence of guns is a large part of it, but there has to be some motive also. What would inspire anyone to start killing innocent people who came to enjoy a sporting event or a religious holiday at a beach?

Or maybe there is no answer, other than that they're just plain nuts. Although the recent upsurge in antisemitism makes me feel that it could be more than just mental illness. Maybe mental illness plus something political, or maybe some cruelty done to them which put them around the bend? The motivation behind all these murders always seems to be a big mystery.

The Death Toll is now at 16.
* Sigh* I am shattered

Would this have happened if the police and government were harder on the pro-Palestinian rioters (not the peaceful march ones, the violent ones) and the Neo Nazi rallies?

The only thing I know for sure is that events and actions on the other side of the world are tearing apart my beautiful country.
Sorry, that's just how I feel!

My thoughts, prayers and heart are with the families of the dead and wounded.

To me these incidents are perpetrated by people with a hatred of Jews.
It is beyond me why this hatred exits.

The motivation is Islamic terrrorism. It's awful but hardly a mystery.

The 50-year-old shooter in Sunday's attack was a licensed firearms holder, according to New South Wales police.

"He has six firearms licensed to him," Commissioner Mal Lanyon said at a news briefing.

The 50-year-old was shot and killed by police on the scene.
Bondi Beach shooting live updates: Victims include children and elderly
I’m Australian , and guns are banned here unless you have a good reason to have them ,like being a farmer ….
so wonder why ????this man had ..was able to have a gun licence …. @RambleTamble

Why are they banned ….this is why ..a mass murder by a nut case in Tasmania
Port Arthur massacre (Australia) - Wikipedia 35 innocent men women and children killed

Sometimes, there really are no words for tragedies such as this.
This isn't some random nutcase. These are two motivated Islamic terrorists. As for words, how about, "Let's try to find these evildoers and try to get them into prison before they commit these horrible acts?"

Sorry to be so steamed up but my son converted to Judaism to win the hand of my daughter-in-law, and they have two Jewish children (albeit with Irish last names.)

very tragic.

By far the worst gun shooting since Port Arthur in 1996 (gun laws changed after that)

this one was anti Judiasm - or anti Israeli actions in Palestine - before that we had in New Zealand the anti Islam one in which an Australian shot people in a mosque

obviously these Jewish people at the beach are not responsible for atrocities in Palestine just like the Muslim people shot in NZ aren't responsible for whatever he objected to

Blanket hatred of whole groups of people is so awful.:(

Don't fool yourself that by thinking if you ban one thing it will stop terrorists or anyone who is hell-bent on killing that they won't find another method of doing it ... bombs, vehicles, knives, arson & the list can go on. If they have the will to do it, then they are able to find a way to commit it.

Sadly, it's an ugly fact of life that we see too much.

Everyone has the right to free speech, right?
I just don't know; my thoughts, prayers and heart are with the families of the dead and wounded.
Saw some reports the killers had 10-20 minutes before they were challenged/shot by police

Bondi Beach terror survivor describes how cops ‘froze’ during 20-minute shooting rampage: ‘I don’t understand why’

Officers working at the scene eventually flooded the footbridge and arrested one of the terrorists

16 people known to be killed.....

Alex Kleytman (left) tragically died while saving his wife of five decades,
Married for five decades, grandmother Larisa Kleytman and her husband came from Matraville, a suburb of Sydney, to celebrate Hanukkah with other Jewish people.

'I think he was shot because he raised himself up to protect me, in the back of the head,' she said.

Mrs Kleytman and her husband came to Australia from Ukraine and have two children and 11 grandchildren.

Again, anti-Jewish persecution has never been caused by something the Jews did, said, or thought. It was and is caused by the hatred, delusions, and irrational prejudices harbored by those who carried out said persecution. After centuries of standing out due to religious and alleged racial difference, without defenders and prevented from defending themselves, Jews stood out as almost an ideal “other.” Whether the immediate cause at various points has been religious difference, conspiracy theory, ancestral memory of hatred, or simply obvious difference, Jews were and continue to be targeted by those who adhere to ideologies of hatred.

One essential question is: why was the 50-year-old shooter licensed to own firearms? Strict gun laws don't do any good if there are ways to get around them. Hopefully, after this, they'll re-evaluate their licensing criteria.

Same thing has been allowed to happen in the UK.. we have lost the country that everyone knew as Great Britain...

I've watched that series, too. It surprised me that people were so against her for her Jewish faith right after the horrors of WWII.

The hero in this shooting is such a brave man. Just jumping in to stop the shooter before anyone else is hurt, with no concern for his own safety.

The shooters being father and son is unusual. That sort of rules out mental illness and sounds like a man obsessed with hatred who taught his son to share in it. So sad.
