HAPPY 2015! I have started a new adventure

I have found a job! I am not complaining but, I am almost three times older than the people I am working with. They are friendly but sometimes if I get stuck and look for help or ask for help some of them don't want to help. New computer programs are popping up all the time and asking someone what to type or what button to push is sometimes necessary for anyone.

Yesterday I started something new and the person sitting next to me seemed to resent the fact that I asked her a question. She got up and moved to the back of the room to get away from me. People who are already trained and who have used the programs before or who just work faster sometimes make it difficult for others, no matter what age they are.

Do companies actually know how much money they lose when they hire people and lose them in less than a few weeks? I am not in jeopardy of losing my job but I see a revolving door of people coming and going. Some companies have hiring ads all the time because they can't keep people working.

If I owned a company I would put more effort in keeping my people and make the necessary changes that would allow me and them to keep a job. I think so many companies end up going out of business just because they don't know how to keep employees. I guess they don't care, but it seems like it cost more to have a revolving door of people than it does to work with them and keep them in the company.

Hiring and training seniors who want to work part time would be an asset to any company. When they have someone off work to have a baby or for any reason they would have someone to fill that position. Temporary employees are not specifically trained to do all jobs, so why would they not keep a solid work force at all times? I don't understand.

Ditto.

Companies should do thorough orientation and training if they want to keep employees.

But do you need the money? You could be keeping a younger person who needs the money out of a job...

Hey Ralphy! What about us old people who need the money?!?! If I can compete with a younger person fair & square for a job, & get it, I think I earned it! Not gonna lie down & let some kid run over me. Would you???
good luck, halalu !

Ralphy started his post by asking if she needed the money. There are many old folks who work because they need the money. There are also many who take jobs because they are bored and just want something to do. There are also many young people ( many with young kids) who need the money and would like to have a job.

Good luck in your new job halalu. It's always difficult in a new job anyway, but if you are not very techie, and all the work revolves around computers, then that is very hard work. Hope others will show you the ropes.

The lack of cooperation you described seems to be fairly common in corporations. Management makes a big mistake by not having better training programs for new employees and by not having a trainer available for questions. Jealousy and competition among fellow employees are all too common.

IMO, we all have to keep remembering just how old we are! We aren't young, like these companies really want/get. I'd probably be darn lucky to get a job today, except at Wal Mart. Heck, my wife is going to be 67 and she even has problems sometimes with co-workers who are much younger than her. Fortunately, she's been with the company for 4 years, but when something changes, she doesn't "catch on" nearly as easy as the younger employees do.

And, there are different reasons for "turn-over" within companies. Some new employees find out they don't like the job they are doing and leave in a few weeks or months........as for me, I've "been there, done that" before. Some also find out they don't like some of their co-workers........they leave. Some find the stress of the job is too much for them.......they leave. Some find out they simply don't like the company.....they leave. There again, I've "been there, done that".

I had an older co-worker one time that done the "hunt and peck" thing on his computer keyboard. Sometimes, I'd have to wait until he was done with the "hunt and peck" to do my job. It would get somewhat aggravated. I couldn't do my job on time, unless he speeded up his keyboard typing skills......which didn't happen.

Thanks for the feedback
I think everybody old and young have to be trained when there is a new program or job being ventured. I have computer skills, and typing skills. I don't think it is alright to assume that all old people are slow to learn. Maybe they just don't want to learn or do whatever any more. I have been in and out of employment for the past six years, so yeah, I need the money
