As a child did you make May Day baskets for your favorite neighbors? Getting up really early on May 1st....quietly sneaking up to their front door.....hanging your woven construction paper basket, filled with flowers on their door knob. What fun that was....

Yes, Nona. When I was a kid, we put the flower baskets on neighbor's doorknobs. At one school I went to, we had a maypole, too. We kids thought it was all great fun.

Happy May Day!

Happy May Day, so nice that there were some celebrations. I don't remember doing anything as a child on May Day. Wet snowy May Day by me today.

Oh yes Wheaten, at school we always had a maypole. Part of "Field Day". Kickball, races and the most graceful girls selected to participate in the May Pole dance. I always envied them their flower crowns.
For those of us brought up as Catholics, the May Procession, honoring the Virgin Mary was always a important occasion. Flowers and white dresses....and those chosen to be the angels escorting us.

We used to have a maypole dance the first 2 or 3 years in public school, then it just quit, mid fifties. I think it was the cold war mentality. There were rumors May Day was associated with communism, socialism, paganism. Too bad, imo.

Beautiful! Lilies of the Valley were one of my mother's favorite flowers.

Anyone ever go a-Maying? I never have, we never did anything like flowers for May Day. But it was my father's birthday, and sometimes it is also Derby Day.

Back in the day - the '70's - May Day was also celebrated as Pot Day. There was a parade down Fifth Avenue in NYC where all the marchers would be smoking joints (still illegal at the time).

Police would be standing at the sides, glaring at the marches, but they evidently had orders not to arrest anyone that day.

I am allergic to shrooms. They work well for a friend of mine with severe cluster headaches, immune to morphine, and any other meds the docs have tried. If she imbibes every two months or so, no headaches. I have heard that for some, peyote is also efficacious. Fortunately, shrooms grow wild here.

I loved to watch the big Soviet parades on a black and white TV in the old days...
