Has anyone had Shingles? OMG!

I’m in the hospital being treated for Shingles. I was admitted due to me being only 73 days post Op for kidney transplant. I’m receiving IV anti viral meds and they are managing my pain. It is on my face. Wow the pain is unbelievable at times!! I’m getting the vaccine that is not live after this is over. I didn’t realize it was available. I thought there was only the live one that Transplant patients can’t receive. Kind of a failure on my Transplant Teams part? I had a full work up b4 surgery. But maybe I should have known myself. Oh well this too shall pass.

I have not, but I had a boss who had shingles and said they were extremely painful. We had the shingles vaccine a couple of years ago as a result.

I'm so sorry you are going through this after having a kidney transplant and wish you the best possible outcome. I'm sorry your medical team didn't provide appropriate advice. There are lots of good thoughts directed your way.

Awful! I feel for you. I had shingles. Mine was the typical waist area. The pain was unbelievable. Pain pills helped sleep with pain, but finally I realized they don't act on inflammation. When I started working on inflammation there was an improvement, but nothing helped much. Getting over shingles takes a long time. When I finally tried to get some sun, a couple of itchy places appeared on my face, and they are still there. If you are in the hospital, I guess you don't need to hear a long story like some who are trying to sort at home. Maybe I'll find the thread again tomorrow. Last night I finally had a long sleep after finally getting on a day schedule. So, I visited a lot online today, but I'm at the end of the day. I'm sorry to read you are having that experience. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for sharing. I know I’m not alone on this journey. I’m hoping this anti viral helps! I’m glad to hear you are back on your schedule.

Both the wife and I had it, but caught it early and an anti-viral did the job. We are both vaccinated and OK. Shingles is nothing to mess with. In addition to pain it can actually cause blindness. I have read that everyone 50 or older should be vaccinated.

Oh I'm sorry you're in hospital and in such pain.... :(

I thought my pain was a kidney stone. That's how it felt at first. As it turns out, there is worse pain than a kidney stone, and that's shingles. I couldn't lie down. That was the worst of the worst part of the pain. For a week, I slept in my car so I could adjust the seat, until finally getting a recliner delivered. The people who were most helpful were those who had been through the same and they gave some good advice over the phone. Three months went by with shingles, but the severe pain didn't last that long. I was too late to take the anti viral, so I can't say. I almost took one of the Gab??? something that another person took because I was in such severe pain, but I decided not to. So, I only took pain pills and eventually ibuprophen too. I haven't had any return pain, but I had a couple of places on the same side of my face as was on my waist appear as I thought I was getting well. The places are still there and itch off and on, but no pain. Thankfully you are in the hospital where you can receive the best care. It sure helps to have people around, as I was lonely and terrified in my car after everyone went to sleep and I couldn't make calls. Thankfully there was a nurse hotline associated with the hospital where I was diagnosed, so I could call if necessary. The nurses were very helpful. Just about everyone I talked to said you just have to go through the process. You must have discovered your shingles in time to take the anti viral. There is probably more that can be done since you are in the hospital. Just having the full time care, as it hard to do much for yourself for a while. Someone told me she had shingles near her eye, but she did okay. Oh, finally reading at the shingles forums proved very helpful. I never joined, but just read the comments and wished I'd found the site at an earlier time. That's how I ended up finding this forum after ending on the night schedule. Next time I won't write so long, as I don't know how much reading you are up to. I hope you feel better soon, and I'll look for your update.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. I have been putting off getting the vaccination because of the stiff price, but after hearing all the stories about it, and having a friend who has had it, I may just break down and get it. Have heard that 1 in three will get it. Not very good odds if true.
Get it @Geezer. I had a mild case recently, but even tho' it wasn't the worst pain I ever had, I'll be seeking the vax at my next Dr. appt.
