Gaer

"Angel whisperer"
My beautiful daughter sent me an alligator bag a while back. She thought I could show some class in my mundane existence (her perception).
"It's worth $700, Mom!" a Lovely shape, a glossy golden sheen, all the buckles and clasps to identify it as exquisite. It would fit a sophisticated New Yorker with a few dozen $900 suits and places to wear them, an extensive shoe wardrobe and a slightly European accent. This should belong to a chic, jewelry wearing, manicured cosmopolitan.
it's now on a shelf in my closet.

My purse, bag, whatever you want to call it, is a simple, thick, soft deerhide open on top with saddlebag straps; coinpurse is a simple deerskin bag. This goes with me and my surroundings. This fits with my boots, levies, denim jacket, plaid shirts and I can wear it to the local mercantile.
Semi-rural New Mexico, dirt clod kickin, timeworn books, big, shaggy dog, collectible saddles, Mexican pavers on the floor, old ammo boxes sitting around. I'm wooden barrels, dove-tail boxes, old carved wooden picture frames. I'm Pine trees, mountain streams and tiny blue wildflowers. I'm kick-back!

Each of us has our own individual style with which we feel comfortable. To integrate airs or pretences just doesn't fit right.
That purse didn't fit me. I'd love to speak French, but I don't. Love to travel internationally, but I don't.
"I could be General Lee, but I ain't!" (from Lonesome Dove)

You guys, Do you have an individual style?

Yes, I have my own style and preferences. One guy told me, "Take out your Jimmy Choos and Louboutins for dancing." Umm, I've given away my stilettos and high heels a long time ago, I prefer my comfy sneakers. I still have some LBD (little black dress).

I appreciate those gifts I know the person took time to pick according to what I like instead of those randomly picked off the shelf that's expensive but I don't need or want.

My basic style is “clean, neat and inconspicuous “ . But I am very picky with purses . I wouldn’t use the alligator one either.. They have to be relatively light weight, and efficient for my habits, to have long comfortable cross body strap, zipper top, fairly light colored lining (hate a purse with black lining), zipper compartments etc just right.Am on my 3rd one of same style, slightly different colors, from a dept store I don’t care for otherwise so won’t advertise it.

Simply do not "get" spending all that money on a handbag! I suppose if you live in a big city you might want to, because, well, that's what some seem to do, but I've carried the same "good" handbag for 20 years. Different choices for different folks, but I'd think you'd worry about getting mugged on public transportation or just walking down a street!

I've been using this laptop bag that I got at Walmart for $20. I originally bought it to carry my I-Pad in when I went somewhere. But, I loved the fact that it had so much room, and enough separate compartments to put things that I want to take with me when I go out. I got to the point where I just started using it instead of a regular handbag. It's so handy to also put small purchases in and I use one side just for my keys and wallet where I can easily find them. And a big plus is that it' stays on my shoulder. Doesn't keep slipping off. Purse wise, it's the best thing I ever did. It's so convenient. (y)

My daughter does the same .. buys me designer bags. I use them, and then they get recycled to her mother-in-law. I think our daughters just want us to have nice things that they know we'd never buy for ourselves. I wish my mother had lived long enough for me to spoil her the way my daughter spoils me.

Saying this, I live a very casual lifestyle these days, occasionally 'dressing up' for special dinners out (pre-COVID, of course).

$700.00 alligator bag? She must have known you'd probably never use it.
My style is always casual. I don't even own a suit. The only reason I have ties is because I worked in places that required them. My photo is as dressy & fancy as I get.
Well.....except no old boxes of ammo. My ammo stash is more up-to-date than yours. :)

Whenever I hear the word "purse", I wince. My ex used to drag me to every store this side of Mars to find her new bag. The old one wasn't ever quite right. Every bag she saw had to weighed, pulled, tugged, the bottom examined under a microscope. Every atom in the lining had to be gone over twice.. It had to be roomy, like a semi trailer, but small & "cute". It had to have all kinds of pockets to carry the 3 tons of necessary things, like a 2 inch "tool kit". It had to be brown, but not too brown.. Or maybe black. It had to be dark blue. No, brown. Of course, just which one of the 4,355 shades of brown? It had to have straps, with straps that came off. It had to contain enough tissues to last at least a decade. It was also the purse she should have bought 8 stores ago. And of, course, the purse she just bought was all wrong.

I have a purse story for you My sister lives in NY, and has more jewelry than she needs, but they go to all kinds of affairs. She also has a dozen (!) Michael Koors purses.
They were on a cruise of the West Coast, and we arranged to meet them in Santa Barbara. We were sitting on a bench chatting when she noticed a few passengers walking by with shopping bags that said "Coach" on them. She said those bags could not contain Coach purses. My wife said, "Of course they have Coach bags in them. You see, we have Coach stores out here in the Wild West".:)

Indubiously, dear lady.

When I parade around the town in my glittery, orange tuxedo with matching knee high wellies, every man in sight looks at me in amazement and thinking, "Wow, I wish I had an outfit like that." 😊
