Helene news out of NC and surrounding mountain states is not good 9/28/24

The devastation is mind boggling and heartbreaking. I see that up to 50 people lost their lives, including a mother and her one month old twins! Just so awful.

I often wonder about the couples I see who are featured on Beachfront Bargain Hunt who buy beachfront homes, especially in the gulf region. I wonder how many (if any) have lost those homes. People here in Jersey who owned beachfront properties still have not recouped their losses; many haven't been able to rebuild, especially those whose homes were second homes. Then Gov. Chris Christie promised they'd get funding to rebuilt, but instead concentrated on doing so for shore businesses because tourism is a major boost to N.J.'s economy.

This is Interstate 40 eastbound over the gorge near the NC/TN line. For those outside the US, I40 is a major coast to coast artery. I drove this part once and it's scary with the gorge on one side, mountain on the other and all the semis driving fast. I have no idea how this will be fixed. The only flat ground is across the concrete barrier which is the westbound side. I doubt that's considered stable enough to get construction
equipment into the area.

Damn scary when you are boxed in by semi's. Two lanes, no shoulder.

You betcha. State Farm no longer insures homes in Florida and California. I don't know how anyone is going to be able to afford the increases, much less those living in coastal areas. I've read articles about wealthy residents in Miami Beach moving to more inland areas of South Florida that used to be occupied by lower income families. Climate change is affecting all of us.
What happened to their promise of :

"Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there!" ?

It became:

"Like a good neighbor, State Farm is where?"?

I guess being a good neighbor sometimes depends on the quantity of horse manure that might be hitting the fan.

Three houses fell into the ocean in Roanthe NC on the Outer Banks during the tropical storm we just had off the coast. It caused a lot of economical damage. They were close and/or on the ocean, I believe.
I have read something about a special risk insurance they have to have. DH says we subsidize that but I don't know. Seems if you choose to build in a likely risk zone you should be responsible.

Southern states have both a high rate of home insurance fraud and make it easy for residents to sue insurers. California is much the same, but Florida is the worst.
A proclamation from the office of Governor Ron DeSantis notes that, although Florida only accounts for 9 percent of the country's home insurance claims, it is home to 79 percent of the country's home insurance lawsuits.
So before you shake one fist at insurance companies and the other at nature you might look to your own back yard.

"Climate change" makes a convenient scapegoat. Offenders find it easy to blame the problem on somebody else. If this is a serious threat why is air conditioning still legal? It can consume as much as 50% of the household energy demand in the south.

More than 700 Canadian lineworkers, including about 300 from Atlantic Canada, have been deployed to assist in restoring power in North and South Carolina in the wake of a major tropical storm.

Jim Salmon, vice-president of Holland Power Services, a power-restoration company with Canadian offices in Maugerville, N.B., said crews from Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are taking part in the efforts after Helene, a powerful hurricane that quickly transitioned to a tropical storm, left a trail of destruction in the area.

Salmon said the crews were in place ahead of the storm.

Man-made climate change is well documented and has been understood for decades. Political forces have prevented a coordinated response. We reap what we sow.
Well then , if you really believe that bullshit, then please tell us just what you are doing to correct it ? or at the least planning on doing ?

Are you going to sell your car and buy a horse ? Have you called the power company to tell them you do not want their service any longer ?

I suppose we won't hear from you any longer here on SF ?

Any serious person or group should lead by example, not by complaint.

I'm sorry. It's man-made if someone seeded the clouds. And I don't rule that out.
Otherwise, how do you think all those mountains in NC were formed?
Rivers, lakes, valleys. Throughout the world cataclysmic events before man ever showed up changed the landscape throughout.
I am not saying you're wrong that humans aren't kind to Mother Nature but I assure you she can handle herself.

The thing that is most surprising to me about these episodes of hurricanes, floods, droughts, heat waves, and forest fires is that I understood it was coming, but I still thought it was something that wouldn't show up until after I was long gone. I expected the onset to be much slower and almost un-perceptible. Scientists got it right, but it seems like their timing was way off. Or maybe I just assumed on my own that the effects of global warming would be more gradual.

I believe in global warming but I also believe that sometimes a storm is just a storm.

The thing that I can’t comprehend are people that have been wiped out multiple times just seem to shake it off and start over again and again.

One Florida woman on the news just shrugged and said that’s the price you pay for living along the Florida coast.

Devastation in the Asheville area....heartbreaking
More than 4,700 National Guardsmen were mobilized across the Southeast Saturday, searching for and rescuing victims of Hurricane Helene, clearing debris and assisting first responders.
National Guard Assists with Hurricane Response in Southeast

My friend lives east of Asheville and she hasn't answered my text. She called on Friday with power loss and downed trees. I suspect it was worse than we thought at that time.

Up until the 80's our climate was fairly regular. There were a few extremes but we could count on our year being about the same everywhere. ( debatable ). About 2015 is when I started noticing a increase in climate "catastrophes, and it has kept increasing each year. What are we going to do about it? The GREAT new question. I guess that can be the title of a new thread. As for the victims of this hurricane my heart is very sad for you, I hope you and yours recover.

I have not gotten a reply yet. Maybe someone else?
Given our recent experience over here, with wildfires, I expect that Lara may be focused on immediate concerns. She could be safe but needing to put attention on doing what's necessary to keep safe. Of course, I hope for the best for her... but I know I posted less here on SF during the local crisis.

Not talking about cloud seeding, the term '"man-made" as used in my post refers to the human activities(industrial, automotive) that has increased the amount of CO2 into the Earth's atmosphere.

@rgp, your comments are way too idiotic to dignify with a reply, so I'll just leave you with this appropriate image that you can use for your forum profile picture:
