How do you deal with feelings of loneliness?

A pet, if possible, is an excellent idea - in my opinion. My cat gives me love every day and I drink it up!

My dog doesn't fill any loneliness need, because I don't have that. While I like being alone, he does make me feel less alone, and his presence does require me to take responsibility for him, which I actually like. I could manage fine without him, but I'd rather not. Apparently, I do have some need that he fills. Love?? Yeah, probably, but it's not the cartwheels kind of love. It feels more like quiet devotion and friendship.
