@hearlady Me, too. I don't know if it was a point of pride or if there just weren't so many mixes available, but I used to bake everything from scratch. Now? Bread. Scones. Cookies. Candy. Um...can't think of much!
Years ago I commented that my step-mother's pie crust was really good and wanted to know her secret. She laughed and said "Already Ready Pie Crust" and to just roll it out a bit because otherwise it's as thick as shoe leather. I've been a believer ever since.
DS2 had us over for a turkey dinner once and served dressing that was to die for. I asked him for the recipe. "Stove Top, Mom!" and all he did was cook and crumble some sage sausage, drain, and dice an apple to add to it. Sold! I only ever make it like that now.
Cakes? Whatever mix is cheap and do a little doctoring.
When I'm cooking real food, like for dinner, it's made from scratch, but does that even count? When it was just DH and me, I'd occasionally get a Hormel roast beast and Bob Evans mashed potatoes. It's too expensive to do that now when feeding all four of us.
I'm such a good-cook fraud! LOL
