How is your day Today, plans and achievements 2024....

It's a cool, overcast and occasionally rainy day here with a high of only 56°. No matter, by mid next week we'll be in the 80s, then drop back to the mid 70s. After today the forecast shows clear weather - and it's about time, too! This year and last have brought exceptional levels of rain to California - not whining because our reservoirs really needed the replenishment. However, there sometimes there can be too much of a good thing, and we're on the borderline of that being so.

Other than a quick run to the library and the 99¢ Store (which I'm sad to say is closing its doors, chain-wide), there's nothing on my out-of-the-house agenda. Other things on today's list include a load of laundry and crunching some business numbers for the upcoming season's orders. (The latter means I'll be bouncing over to SF now and then when my brain needs a break.)
It makes me happy to hear someone speak thankfully to have the best things in life. Thanks for reminding me @CinnamonSugar . I needed that.
Wanted to also comment on this - how very true, @RadishRose & @CinnamonSugar. I sometimes need the reminder, too, and am grateful to have had it this morning. In fact, I just started a thread about it.

ONE thing you're grateful for...

Is it illegal to not accept cash in New York State?

For over two years, it has been illegal for New York businesses to refuse cash payments, and the city has since been actively defending payment choice with fines for offenders. New York Times columnist Pamela Paul recently explored one particularly stubborn holdout, and why defending cash is so important.Jan 22, 2023https://www.cashmatters.org/blog/why-new-york-is-defending-cash#:~:text=For over two years, it,defending cash is so important.

Why New York is Defending Cash - Cash Matters

You should report this store to state government. They are breaking the law.

I did call Dollar General corporate headquarters (I think I did). The person answering had such an accent, I had difficulty understanding him - probably an outsourced service. He said they would look into it.

Thank you all for the good wishes. Sorry I don't have the energy for individual replies. They let me come home because the two guys live here. Otherwise it would be rehab. I have six new prescriptions and just keeping track tires me out. Things are looking up. It just takes time.

I've just spent an hour.. portioning, bagging and freezing the bacon ribs and the Chicken thighs I bought at Costco.... My freezers are full to the brim now, with meat bread, veggies, butters etc.....I'm going to have to start seriously eating from them now...

Costco???? I assume Brits had a similar type of store. But I surprised by the name, "Costco".

It's a lovely day in the neighborhood, sunny, not much wind and pretty to look at from inside. It's cold 🥶!

Sir was scheduled off today but came in around 8:30. Good thing, too, because as usual, I was playing beat the clock.

@hollydolly I had to Google bacon ribs. We might have such a thing in the US; I've just never seen or heard of them before.

some people think they're short ribs, baby back ribs ..or pork ribs..but they're actually different, don't ask me how.. but the bacon ribs look like this...

the pork ribs, and short ribs are available in Costco too but they're in separate fridges from the Bacon ribs... When I was growing up we used to have bacon Ribs with Cabbage.. they were and are still, called Ham Ribs in Scotland

Another expensive morning. Had a dental check up last week and it was found that a filling needed to be replaced. I made an appointment for 2 weeks time, buy a couple of days ago, the tooth started to give problems. Since we're going on hols next week, I managed to get an appointment this morning to get it fixed.

If you phone my dentist's surgery, the first thing you hear is that they don't accept NHS patients, but there are two alternatives. You can subscribe to a dental plan - which is what we do - or pay to register with the practice and then pay for any treatment, check ups, X-rays etc.. as needed. This is the way with many dentists. There are a few who will accept NHS patients, but in general, going private is the only option

yes I understand... that pic of course is my local costco here in the UK...

We don't have as many Costcos as the US...so most people have to travel a long way to get to their nearest one. I'm fortunate that I live between 2... which is the only incidence of 2 being so close in the UK

Hawkie... the war is over dear man ... you can stop fighting now...:sneaky:

Bad day from the getgo. I went to town to get groceries and was held up quite a while by road construction. Then when I reached in my pocket to get my shopping list, I couldn't find it. I tried to remember what was on it an only ended up only getting a few items.

As long as I was in town, I went to Dollar General and pick out a few things. When I went up to the checkout, the clerk said she would take me because they discontinued the self-checkout. She rang me up and when I got out my wallet and handed her money, she said, "We are card-only now." No self-checkout and they don't accept money? What's going on?

I also decided to check out the library food pantry and all they had was a few sorry looking potatoes, carrots and onions.

A wasted morning.
Wow! I'm a bit confused as to how a store can not accept "legal tender"!

Oh, nooooo!!!

At first I wanted to laugh, at the picture in my head of you sitting on floor with Benefiber raining down!!!

But hurting your back is not funny. I hope it's not bad and you're not in too much pain!

About 20 minutes ago I put an advert on the neighbourhood app, asking for someone to come and dismantle some furniture and take it away ... within less than 3 minutes I had people messaging me with offers... but they clearly don't read.. 2 of them wanted to know what was the make of the thing..even tho' I'd specifically posted it in the request, because it makes the item heavier than normal.. another said he'd do it as long as it was on the ground floor..and there was space to park right outside... another said he'd do it.. cost of 2 men.. and come from London... his price was pretty steep tbh...and he wanted pictures ..

Now I don't mean to be rude to anyone, but I'm a little wary because all of these people have foreign names, and English is not good ... all in different towns than mine... and given they don't seem to be clear on what they're supposed to be dismantling, and taking away..I'm a little bit wary

Me too, This is the first time I had it happen. Maybe they had a problem with bad money.
Well, could be, but....I still don't see it.

If there is bad money going around, then that is something for the authorities to take care of.

I actually thought it was a law that they had to accept it...but I could be very wrong about that.

So, if they don't accept "legal tender", does that mean that our Government issued money is no good?

This situation is bothering me. I'm going to see if I can find out more.
