First of all, the fire-fighting effort is directed with the aim to keep fire away from residences, if possible. Secondly, usually wildfire tends to jump around. So when it has gone through residential areas in our province, it is completely unpredictable which buildings will be destroyed. Which, on the one hand is why whole villages or neighborhoods can receive evacuation orders, but on the other hand it's anyone's guess whether any particular home will be destroyed.

If a household winds up being homeless, they have to do their best to find shelter with friends, family, a hotel, or some provisional housing arrangement provided by some level of government. We have friends in the nearby small city who have said they will accommodate us, if need be. When a home (and/or rural outbuildings) are destroyed, then, if there is insurance covering, the owners try to get a decent deal from the insurer.

JBR, you have my full sympathy for your dire situation, and I hope for the best and pray for you.

Regrettably, your situation is not unique. California had its share of disasters. For example, "The Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history. The fire began on the morning of Thursday, November 8, 2018 ... The Camp Fire caused 85 fatalities ... and destroyed more than 18,000 structures, causing an estimated $16.5 billion in damage." Camp Fire (2018) - Wikipedia

Currently, the Park Fire in Northern California is now with 423,000 acres and 640 structures destroyed the 4th largest fire in California's history. <fire.ca.gov>

There are consequences. Several property insurance companies have left California, while others do no longer accept new applications. Our house insurance has doubled. State Farm just asked the California Public Utilities Commission for permission to increase the rates by another 30%.

Florida has different disasters, but apparently property insurance has skyrocket there to such an extreme that many home owners simply cannot afford longer insurance and start carrying the risks by themselves. It’s an awful gamble.

Cheer up. Not everything is lost yet. There is always hope for better days.

A little yard work, in the A/C by 10AM...
Me, too. There are only two temperatures here in the summertime: hot and hotter.

Good morning! Going to try to do the rest of the weeding in front this morning, then water the flowers. Once again, too hot to be outside.

There's laundry to do. I don't mind washing and drying, it's folding the stuff after it's done. Feel free to volunteer...

I've looked at the checking account, and what I think is a mistake hasn't been taken back. Yet.

Morning all folks.....woke at 3am for some unknown reason...dang it....welp dunno what I am up to today yet,
brain not in correct gear....lawn got mowed finally so looks
decent outside, temp is 67 but may not get much over 80 today
..and rain coming in from west on radar, but weather peeps say
no rain today!!! may order a bit of groceries today, and do some
more checking on a sit walker for myself...also got to call a guy
for some hauling away trash and junk stuff...okay that is plans
for the day....but you know how they can change!!!!! ;):p:coffee:o_O

Well I was supposed to be going out this afternoon for an appointment at my Doctors surgery... and as you all know by now it takes weeks to get an appointment , so I'm always loath to cancel one for any reason.. but today I'm not feeling the best so I called to cancel.. and try to make another one, and the receptionist said after looking to see what I was seeing my doctor for.. said she would get the Doc to call me instead, to save me waiting for another appointment.. and the Doctor did.. 10 minutes later. Fabulous !!

@hawkdon Plans change? Heaven forbid! Once they're made, they're carved in stone, right? Glad your mower dude showed up yesterday. Mine did, too. Of course, my mower dudette lives right here ;)

@hollydolly How nice! Now you don't have to go out. Did you get your curtains hung yesterday?

@hearlady The storm hasn't affected us at all. The best we got was a little breeze yesterday. If we're lucky, we may get rain as "soon" as the middle of next week.

The iris bed is finished. Yay. Now I just have to wait for the weeds to grow back so I can do it again:( Tomorrow I need to start on the iris bed in back. Sigh. A weeder's work is never done.

More baby flowers this morning! The Bermuda grass hasn't germinated yet, but it probably will in the next day or two because it's so darned hot. Bermuda loves the heat and sun, both of which we have in abundance.

Time to shift laundry. Also time to fix some breakfast.

@Trila Greetz to Maggiecat's boyfriend and to 🐐man and you.

Unbelievable!!!! Good for you!!

No Gigi..I still haven't hung the curtains. I got sidetracked yesterday with other things.. and today I'm not feeling the best, so not done them yet.. the livingroom looks strangely smaller without the bare windows. You'd think it would look larger but it doesn't...

It's like a winters day here apart from the temp... very windy and raining.. just the sort of day you want curtains at the window...:D...however it is a big job.. first I have to put all the hooks into the new curtains ( very heavy lined curtains) and then hook them onto the rings..so I'll do one window at a time

Did laundry yesterday. Not that I have a lot, but I also washed one of the dog beds; twice.

Torrential rain yesterday and light rain this morning. Still overcast.

More than a half loaf of ww bread went mouldy yesterday in the bread box. Thankfully, I have a nice seeded rye in the freezer. I will go back to removing slices as needed/

On the brighter side, my houseplants are doing well and my 2 potted Hibiscus outside are blooming more quickly now.

I dyed things blue today.
I don't like to wear bright white. It doesn't do me any favors. I had a nice top with eyelet sleeves, a short sleeved light hoodie, two sweaters, and some denim that needed refreshing. All cotton. They came out so good! I almost got rid of them!
New clothes!

what shade of Blue?

The great thing about blue, because there's sooo many shades it's a very versatile colour.

at least half of my wardrobe contains blue of one shade or another

I am a star ! I have to say that because no-one else will. :p

Why am I a star ?.. because dear friends I fixed my broken Venetian blind here in the little office room.

The pole handle that's used to open and close the slats broke at the joint... a year ago.. and I've had to stand on a stool every night and every morning using my fingers to open and close the blinds..very awkward.. I thought I would have to get someone in to install a new blind... but after just one more frustrating open and shut malarkey.. I went up to the barn, and gathered some bit and bobs.. and tried fixing it myself.. and yeaaah... I did it..not the most professional looking job but at least now it works properly again !

@holly,, good job!
Isn't it great to do something you thought you couldn't go and do?

With hubby working 2 jobs & seldom seen when I needed something fixed.

Now with him home, when some silly little job needs fixed.
I'm on my way to get my tools while he is still trying to the problem.

It's getting harder for him to get his legs moving.
Says they are weak,, they don't want to move.

I wish I could. How are you with the fires now?
The area just north of us, that has been under evacuation order for at least a week, is now returned to evacuation alert — which means that, for now at least, residents in that area can return home. It's a hopeful sign for us.

Everything hangs on how the winds treat the situation, and whether we stay a little cooler, and whether we get some substantial rain. Those folks might have to move out again, but we hope not.

I've just realised it's my eldest brothers' birthday today.. 9th Aug ... he's 78 today ...goodness how on earth did that happen ?

I think of him as being young always...

he's had MS for many years and had to stop full time work as a double decker bus driver.. but he took on the role of director of a mental health charity because one of his adult children has MH issues... but after many years in that role, he's had to resign from it now his MS has become quite advanced.

Happy Birthday to my Big Bro..
