How many meds do you take?

I take five…three for blood pressure and cholesterol, two for prostate. And to think, I took none until my 40’s! Still, they beat surgery or taking the long mud nap…🙀

I appreciate your concern, the same one my son has. I have many different conditions, different doctors, under the umbrella of my hospital. I am being closely guarded and cared for. I have doctors I trust but will be changing my PC doc for unrelated reasons.

Medications have been cut out over the years, sometimes with disastrous results. I feel comfortable in this current medication "regime."

Depending on the conditions, it can be very difficult to find a medication regime that is effective. Once you find one, you live in fear of having it changed because you know what the symptoms are.

As for taking pills to counteract the effects of other medications, there's nothing wrong with that. For example, some medications make your nauseous, and being prescribed something to counter that is sensible.

The bad news is I took the wrong medication tonight while getting ready for bed
The good news is I'm now protected from heartworms and fleas for the next three months
Heh. I accidentally took my dogs Incurin (estrogen) tablet and called poison control to see if I should worry. They said "No" in a bored voice. I'll bet they have stories.

I take 4 prescriptions for thyroid, blood pressure, cholesterol, and a mild diuretic...and several supplements, I have just ordered a B12 complex, hoping for extra pep.

Well, let's see.... I take 9 prescription pills first thing in the morning, plus one shot from my Trelegy inhaler, then a little later I take 9 vitamins, plus 4 shots from my Ventolin inhaler during the day and finally 5 prescription pills in the evening/bedtime.

And if the arthritis in my feet is acting up, I take up to 12 ibuprofens during the day and evening. But some days none.

I don't take prescribed meds
I take daily multi dose vitamin pill, calcium 600& D, Vitamin C twice/ day
I've been taking Aleve twice a/ day for my ankle pain, that stops tomorrow
Why will you be stopping Aleve for your ankle if it's not too intrusive to ask?

I had a friend that was on 15 medications. Some were to remedy the side effects of other medications. She finally found a doctor that was willing to listen and gradually eliminate many of them. She ended up feeling much better.

I have seen older people in my family taking too many pills. I read that once you start taking more than 4 it’s a serious concern. I am very careful when a doctor wants to prescribe something and I ask many questions and do my own research in order to make a decision. I think that’s a big problem for seniors and detrimental to their health.

You are so right. I feel sorry for us seniors who just take what is prescribed without doing research. I had an endocrinologist prescribe me an old fen-fen drug and Lexapro, saying they could be taken together. Not so.
Also, not good to take w/my heart condition. That's just one example.

I'm sure it happens more than not, and some people probably think they're supposed to feel that bad, not knowing any better.

We have to be our own health advocates.

When doctors make mistakes, whether during diagnosing, prescribing or treating, etc., the very best of the lot will beat themselves up for a few hours - at most a day or two, and then they move on. Meantime, the patient's family is making caregiving, nursing home or funeral plans.

I went to a doctor and I told him I did not want any medications for bone loss. He told me he was going to call in a prescription vitamin for me and told me the Vitamin it was. I came home and looked up the vitamin and it was one for bone loss. The side effects included something I was getting another medication for. I called the pharmacy and told them not to fill it because I was not going to take it and I didn't!
