Hi everybody my name is Peter and I did have a regular Seinors page open on my iPad but it is gone- disappeared and I am quite sad but this looks like a great site so happy again

being old I need a lot of help so some questions may sound odd but that’s just me - I try not to be a dill so usually just read and gain my information that way

one question I have is that I have a granddaughter living in the country and she is going to university in Melbourne and I would like to know that if she lived in our home and I charged her thirty dollars per week towards her food would this income affect my pension as the wife and I are on part aged pensions

hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year - now we have Easter on the doorstep

kind regards to all

Centrelink has financial advisors (not the counter staff) and you can make an appointment with one to discuss your plans. For myself I wouldn't bother. Your grand daughter is merely contributing to the family purse for her provisions. I would consider it a private arrangement between family.

Thanks very much and your idea agrees with my thoughts but Centrelink is very particular about anything involving money

have never had any problems with them myself but what is reported in the press and on radio is frightening

kind regards

Peter, Were I you, I wouldn't charge her ANYTHING ! Kids trying to get a college education these days have
a hard enough time just passing the courses as it is, without worrying about where the money is coming from.

As long as it's not reported as an expense on her tax return.

Actually, the only snag would be if she claimed rent assistance because $30 for food is not rent. Nor is it income for you because the food is for her. At $30 pw you would be subsidising her.

Still, the Centrelink advisor will tell you what is and is not allowable. He/she may even inform you of ways that you can maximise your part pension. Our experience with one before we retired was very helpful. There is no charge for this service.

Currently I am contributing regular amounts of money to a grand daughter who has just moved to Melbourne to do a masters degree. It is to help her with expenses such as student union/admin fees and text books. I'm not bothering Centrelink with the details unless they ask. The sum is well below the allowable threshold for gifting.

Hello Peter and :welcome: to the forum. You could always just ask the grandaughter to buy a few groceries every week or take out.

Thanks very much - our ancestors are from Scotland so we had to visit and were astounded by its beauty

thanks for your advise

kind regards
