I done a small shop just now.

Is that for real ?.. Children not being taught how to read an analogue clock ?
Yes it is as far as I know, it is written about regularly in the newspapers,
I have asked a young person if they know the time and they pull out a
phone and tell me the time, not only young people, many older ones
don't have a watch any more, though older people can tell the time
from clocks that have hands.

The important thing is that they are able to come up with the correct answer. 🤭1662320906096.jpeg

Most grocery stores are understaffed. The people I've encountered are as slow as they can be. No one working there looks happy. At least they're relatively polite. If I waited for someone to bag my groceries, I'd still be standing there since 1980. I only use paper bags and no plastic. I'd rather do it myself. That way, I control what goes where in the bags and how heavy they are.

This is the new way so just "buck up" as they say lol. As you know there's a labor shortage because seasoned employees found they could make more money working from home or collecting unemployment.

So businesses are hard up for experienced help and unwilling to raise salaries because the businesses are also suffering due to inflation. So they hire anyone willing to work...qualified or not. Don't bother reporting the workers because there's no one else better to take their place.

We just have to resort to settling for less now and just be grateful there even ARE groceries on the shelves.

It won’t be long before baggers and cashiers are a thing of the past like the gas station attendants that used to pump gas, check oil, etc…

The local Wegman’s recently installed self checkouts that do not except cash, only credit cards.

A small step towards eliminating the counting, banking, armored car services, etc…

My biggest concern is what happens to all of the people that are able to earn an honest wage performing a basic task.

Regarding businesses suffering - The Supermarket was Coles and their last reported profit was over one billion dollars and still they put the prices up. I have nil sympathy for them.
The floor workers, yes, they are getting a raw deal but the managers and share holders? Laughing at the general public.

Did you read @Pam 's post about her Grandchildren..?

Now that we don't have the plastic bags anymore, the checkers will not help us pack our own bags in the shops. Bummer!
will they do it if you ask for help?.. Here we always have to pack our own, but in all supermarkets if we're unable to pack for whatever reason we can ask them to do it and they will. Some even offer..

Cashiers don't pack bags here unless we ask for help... we pack our own bags...
I didn't know that. But Bretrick's story is one reason I like self check out. WINCO Foods is pack your own groceries only with a divided belt for the scanned groceries. Sometimes you have to go pretty fast to get everything bagged before the next person is behind you.

I've had cans put on tomatoes and a snotty response once when I asked that all cold things go in one bag at other grocery stores. I prefer to bag my own.

How do most people feel about self bagging in your area.

I normally use self checkout and find it a better experience than having to watch with an eagle eye the cashiers not caring if heavy stuff goes on soft stuff.
This time I saw the cashier looked bored and decided to give her something to do. Mistake....

No, I'm not retired, but I've worked from home for many years.

I do understand what you're saying, but laziness is basically a way-of-life around here. Plus the store I mentioned has never seemed to have a shortage of employees- if the one didn't want to show up, she should have called someone else to fill in.
that someone else might have said no. you never really know.

Yes again hollydolly, Pam's family are doing things properly
and teaching their children, I bet that they could read before
they went to school too.

I also didn't mean that it was the schools who were at fault,
it is the family who are supposed to start educating their child
before they start school, unfortunately some are too busy with
their phone to even speak to a child.

Of course I was referring to the many businesses that are not only suffering from the effects of the pandemic but have already gone bankrupt and closed like the many mom and pop stores that just can't compete.

Laid all my products on the conveyor ready to be scanned, with my shopping bag first. Bread last.
You can guess what happened.
Bag was placed, all the products were scanned, but not immediately placed in the bag.
So, when it came to the bread which was scanned last, the cashier squashed it through grabbing it too hard, then put in the bag first and was about to pile everything else on top.
"Stop right there, before we go any further, I will now go and get a fresh loaf of bread because you just squashed that one. While I am gone, you can load the heavy items in the bag first then the rest on top"
I got "The Look"
When I returned with the bread I asked her to be gentle with and hand it to me when scanned thank you.

Why is it so difficult?
I bag my own. I bring in reusable bags.

It's not their groceries so they don't care. I get melted ice cream a lot when I order mine online. As much as I hate to say it, we are now living in a society where people are no longer serving customers. They're just there punching the time card, doing their 8 hrs. and shuffling off to their lives afterwards.

We are an interruption to the day they'd rather be spending at home rather than taking care of us. Plus it's not easy to tolerate the general public in the service industry because the public can be quite nasty and sometimes it's uncalled for.

What I do is hang on to my bread products til the last. Then I lay it on the belt and as it's coming to them I ask them to please bag my bread separately from the other groceries. Then I make sure I take possession of that bag immediately. That usually takes care of it.
You are so right! Employees do not care even if they are trained (tongue-in-cheek humor) in how to do it. But then again the manager for the most part these days is a cashiers with keys.

you can train someone to do something the right way. you can't force them to do it though. once they're on their own they do whatever the hell they want anyway. they seem to have the audacity to think that they can choose to do whatever they want even though they work for the company not the other way around.
