I had a look at Facebook today

I just checked my account... I've had it for more than 12 years. There was a time my "friends" list held close to 200 people that I knew personally but never really connected with often. Right now it has 27... and every one of them is someone close. I just kept whittling the number down little by little.

I have never once had any problems... no security issues ever. Nothing. People on my friends list know me as "good ol friend", "Aunt Katie", "Cousin K", or "my sister."

Facebook exists for one reason, to collect data on you. Don't give them any. Don't post information about yourself like schools, jobs. Don't answer polls about anything like your first car or pets names. Don't post photos of yourself or loved ones. This is all stuff scammers can use to make themselves more believable. Especially with the advances AI is making, this is all gold to them. Of course I would say that about any social media platform.

or be sensible and use it wisely. Like any social media platform - or anything really.

I use Facebook as a way to keep in touch with family and a few friends, people don't write letters anymore.I don't use my real name because I have never trusted the internet. Those few friends and family know the name I use. However there are other reasons to use Facebook, for instance the forest fire info, restaurant menus, etc. I suspect there is some sort of contest to see who can get the most friends, that doesn't interest me. People I don't know and who don't know me ask to be friends....No thanks!!

I rarely post anything on FB, but I use FB Marketplace all the time, and it is wonderful. I have bought and sold lots of stuff, and it is so much better than Craigslist or Ebay. It's not hard to avoid scammers. Keep all transactions as cash only, and if you're selling something, always check the buyer profile if someone is responding to your ad prior to replying. Most of the time it's a legit person, but once in a while it's someone wanting you to conduct a wireless money transfer. I just ignore them, and have never had a problem.
