I had a look at Facebook today

I just checked my account... I've had it for more than 12 years. There was a time my "friends" list held close to 200 people that I knew personally but never really connected with often. Right now it has 27... and every one of them is someone close. I just kept whittling the number down little by little.

I have never once had any problems... no security issues ever. Nothing. People on my friends list know me as "good ol friend", "Aunt Katie", "Cousin K", or "my sister."

Facebook exists for one reason, to collect data on you. Don't give them any. Don't post information about yourself like schools, jobs. Don't answer polls about anything like your first car or pets names. Don't post photos of yourself or loved ones. This is all stuff scammers can use to make themselves more believable. Especially with the advances AI is making, this is all gold to them. Of course I would say that about any social media platform.

or be sensible and use it wisely. Like any social media platform - or anything really.

I use Facebook as a way to keep in touch with family and a few friends, people don't write letters anymore.I don't use my real name because I have never trusted the internet. Those few friends and family know the name I use. However there are other reasons to use Facebook, for instance the forest fire info, restaurant menus, etc. I suspect there is some sort of contest to see who can get the most friends, that doesn't interest me. People I don't know and who don't know me ask to be friends....No thanks!!

I rarely post anything on FB, but I use FB Marketplace all the time, and it is wonderful. I have bought and sold lots of stuff, and it is so much better than Craigslist or Ebay. It's not hard to avoid scammers. Keep all transactions as cash only, and if you're selling something, always check the buyer profile if someone is responding to your ad prior to replying. Most of the time it's a legit person, but once in a while it's someone wanting you to conduct a wireless money transfer. I just ignore them, and have never had a problem.

Have had my FB account for 10 years. I touch base with those I might
otherwise be out of touch with, and also a few relatives. I keep a small
friends network, that works best for me.

I was recently looking for a sewing machine to sew lightweight shade cloth panels as windbreaks in my small veggie growing area ,and I wanted a Husqvarna as I know they are good at sewing anything tough …
it Popped up to direct me to FB …sales page …didn’t even know they had a sales page …

Ive got a macine but I dont use it for sewing anything other than fabric

I've had that happen a couple of times. It's of little help if you don't belong to facebook. What?? They expect me to get a facebook account to do business with them? Not a very good business plan. I just ignore them and go elsewhere. I guess if you want a Husqvarna, they expect that. They do make good chainsaws, but there are other good chainsaws to buy.

Must say that the way it operates is detrimental to all the businesses that use it as their web site.
I was thinking about going somewhere different for breakfast this morning and noticed many businesses had Facebook as their only point of contact.
Well we all know that one can view the first page of Facebook without being a member, but any further is out of bounds to non members.
What a backward way of doing business. There would be so many non members unable to view menus and the like that the business will not get their cash.
Case in Point, I was looking at a particular business which I thought I might visit though because I was unable to view their menu I will not be going there to spend my money.
What a crazy business model. The businesses are doing themselves a disservice by using Facebook as their only point of contact.
This is not how Facebook started out, was it?
I thought it was to connect people, all over the world.
Now it is what? Add your own thoughts...
I agree. It irks the tweet outta me when looking for info on a business or professional, and the only source available is FB. That tells me that they're too cheap or too lazy to put out a website of their own, so how solid could their business be?

Building a website is very cheap these days, as there are hundreds of templates out there for use. I have a very small business. If I can put out a website, anyone can.

I stay way clear of FB. It's part of the dark side.

Apart from Restaurants/eateries only using Facebook as point of contact, most sporting clubs do the same thing.
Unless one is a member of the club, plus on Facebook then one is locked out of all information regarding the clubs activities, upcoming events and games.
They are called Private Groups and only members have access.
Whose dumb idea is that?
What possible reason can there be for making suburban grade clubs exclusive to members only?

Unlike most people here, I like FB and go there daily. I have connected with the people who belonged to a big forum I used to go to. Also the people who followed my blogs. Then there is all my family and friends. People I used to work with and people I went to school with. People I never thought I would ever talk to or see again. Many of them are my closest friends now. I don't spend any money there. I know what is going on in my area due to pages or groups I follow. It is like most things (and not just online) be careful and know what you are doing.

I, too, get very irritated with businesses that only have a FB account. The one that really gets my goat is the county wildfire updates. Their main website is updated once a day, maybe, and if you want something more recent, it refers you to their FB page. We were surrounded by five wildfires, all within 50 miles, one within 9 miles and heading in this direction. I managed to get info from other places but it was a real PITA.

A family member worked for FB for five years in the fraud division. They wouldn't tell me much about what their job entailed. I didn't really want to know...

I just deleted my FB after 20 years and I most certainly will not miss it now.
For the past few months they emailed me every day with warnings of some logging in to my account but it always indicated from my own computer and area so I just ignored but did change my password.

Then I got four email warning me they did not agree to certain conditions in my business account quoting a name so that made me look thoroughly into my account. I found four names and business I supposedly was partnered in and that scared the hell out of me so I decided to delete immediately. Also groups I supposedly had joined.
Very, very, scary

It took me almost two hours to get to the actual word 'delete' and that will not happen for another month.

I, like others used it only for family and old friends contact and I won't miss that too much either as the younger family members don't actually post their news anymore. I had not made a post for over three years.
All I can say is goodbye and good riddance
