I just wonder about some Intro Posts....

I never write an intro, I just jump in head first. Since I lurk for a while, I already know if I like the forum and most of the people.

As for the ''About", I mainly like to know the sex and the state/country where they live.

I am on four forums: this one, one for my profession, an RV one, and one for my truck. I haven't posted, regularly, on two of those forums, for years, and only joined the truck one in the last month, to work on issues with my vehicle.

I think people on many forums, at once, can't help but be spread too thin. I view them in the same way I've viewed old acquaintances whom I used to see in various social gatherings, working the crowd: Insincere people who care that you listen to them, but don't actually give a damn about what you're saying to them.

My step sister, from my dad's second marriage, was astounding, that way: You could be talking to her about an important (to you) subject, and she'd pick up with an entirely different subject, about herself, once you completed your sentence.

I only knew one other person, a macrame artist, who approached being as horrid. Talking to her felt like you'd entered The Twilight Zone because not a single conversation made any sense, for being entirely disjointed.

Ever watch Big Bang Theory, and Sheldon Cooper ....:ROFLMAO:

I must confess I zig-zag between sites. If a thread has caused unpleasantness, as often happens, I concentrate on a different site for a few days until things have cooled.
So I may come on here several days in a row, then you don't see me for a while, then I come back. It's also true that people will log in and read the threads but without contributing. So they may still be here, but as an observer.

I’ve been giving this some thought. My wife is one of those who don’t post here. She is a member and posted once in the welcome section. She does read posts sometimes, but doesn’t contribute. Why?

If you spoke to her one on one, she would talk your arm off. But, if she had to speak to a group of people, she couldn’t do it. A lot of people are like that. Posting to a forum is like speaking to a big group that you don’t even know. It’s a bit scary.

Even with the anonymity of the web, you are still putting your ego on the line and risking rejection. Did I write something dumb that people will laugh at? Did I make any spelling or grammatical mistakes?

Also, the technology is still mysterious to some, especially older folks. My wife couldn’t post a picture if her life depended on it. There’s the fear of screwing something up. I put shortcut icons on her screen for the forum and all her games. She could learn to be more computer savvy, but she doesn’t want to.

So, maybe there are people out there like my wife. They work up enough courage to join, but not enough to join in. As far as I'm concerned, that's OK. Different strokes for different folks.

I am totally computer ignorant.
It would help if my were vision better: Glass on, glasses off, get within hugging distance of screen...

I am way too old to be concerned about grammar, currently waging war against capitalization of first words on sentences. my own little revolution...

strongly believe it this amount of info is on this 'infernal machine' is dangerous.
I would like to know what 'those that pull the levers' do with this info, I'm sure the answer would be scary.

(As in the list complied of credit card, which began in the 60's -the collecting of data
and the unknown 'other.'
Who can say how much of your life has been made available to folks-what folks, what are they going to do with it?)

I have again wandered away from OP's topic, ah.

Thanks to all of you,
for the many very interesting replies to my wonderings and to my question I posted.

The posts on this thread, add a lot of ideas, to my thoughts, and I appreciate the sharing, also.

I belong to two forums this one and a UK site. The UK site I was a moderator on and off for a few years and that was a challenge that I took on and for the most part enjoyed and a learning curve for sure.

I feel Intro sites can be good but some not so good when new registrations register and get lots of welcomes and never appear; ok on a large site but not on a smaller one.

I was active on a forum that was focused on lonely and discontented people. For several years it helped keep me sane as I coped with my ninety-something mother's descent toward death. But that forum declined in active membership and the tone of its dialog became acrimonious and adversarial. Eventually my only regular participation was on its Games page....back-and-forth with another member who also happens to be on this forum. She recommended SF to me and here I am.

OK, I took a look. It's blank - - - sorry !
How about, I'm as old or older than most in the group - -was married before some of our members were born - - have a flock of kids, grandkids, and great grands - - haven't accrued a small fortune despite my best efforts. That's it in a nutshell, for better or worse. 🙂

I have gone into groups on FB, forums & other places & once inside, I've decided I didn't like what I was seeing & have left. I wish they would make a link you could click on so you could delete your acct altogether if you changed your mind.

FB has one...

That happened here didn't it about time I joined, lots
of Australians came from a dead/dying forum there
I believe.

Mike.
That is correct, Mike. I am one that stayed. I like the fact that this forum is very large. I belong to three smaller forums and after a while they become very predictable and discussion is less interesting. Since joining I have learned a lot about USA and Americans and how they think.

I, for one am glad I found this forum, intend on contributing until I pop my clogs. I think I saw someone post that phrase somewhere. lol

I hope to be welcomed always. If I do disappear at times...it will probably due to health reasons.
