I Love Accents-----Do You?

Well, being from the South, there are many accents, from very "country" to the "genteel"! Honestly, I hate hearing my voice on an answering machine. I think.."Oh goodness, you sound awful!" So I let the robotic man on the machine answer my phone!

Maggie, don't worry I have been called Sir so very many times. Too much testosterone or too many years smoking? Yup I can come close to the bass in The Oak Ridge Boys...well sucks to be me.

I just love how some people claim they don't have an accent. My sister and others say they have no accent because they are from Michigan, etc. . :crying:

As an American in Scotland I'm the one with the accent according to everybody else! LOL.

My New England accent always amused some people I met in the service from other parts of the country. Some ask me to say words like tomato and potato, car and garage, and then they would laugh out loud...

It's not the accent, but the dialect here that I have difficulty with. Here it's Doric and is mainly spoken in N.E Scotland.

I'd be lost listening to Doric I think. It took me a while but I understand about 95% of what I hear now with lowlands. And I've been known to use them myself. Especially love the looks I get when I say 'nae bother, hen'.

Although I lived in Mass from age 5 - 8 I don't remember the accent at all. On our visit to last summer to RI and Mass I loved hearing the Mass accent!

My ex husband came from Yorkshire while I come from North East Essex.............I always swear I said 'yes' when I should have said 'no'.:lol1:

I wish I could do a Scottish accent. I'm tired of people asking me about Trump when they hear my accent. They demand to know why people support him like I've got the answer.

I lived in NJ for the first half of my life and have never lost the accent. Like Maggiemae, I'm horrified when I hear my own voice on a recording. (OMG, is that what I sound like?) Somehow, the voice in our head is different from what comes out of our mouth!

I was 48 when I moved to Scotland. I still find it funny when people say 'you haven't lost your accent'. Ummm no. The accent is set by that age. I've known Dutch and German people who have lived here for 50+ years and their accent hasn't changed either.

Especially love the looks I get when I say 'nae bother, hen'.

You remind me of a puzzling congratulations on the birth of my grandson. They spoke of the "wee bairn"...very common but I had to look it up the first time.

Bairn is normally in the east and 'wean' (pronounced wane) is used here in the west.

I'm not particularly fond of the US Northeastern accents.. To harsh.. and they really need to learn how to say their "R's"

Being from Chicago.. I of course have NO accent at all.

I love accents, especially in music. A lot of the music I love is from the UK and other countries where there is a distinctive accent in the vocals.

The most interesting accent I've ever heard was one from a caller when I was working in a support department. She was Vietnamese and had been raised in the deep south after moving there as a child. There was this very interesting mix of a Vietnamese accent with a heavy southern drawl. It was very cool.

I enjoyed hearing Australian accents when I lived in South Australia .. and many Aussie's seemed to enjoy my Canadian accent.
