I live halfway across the country from my soon-to-be 5 year old grandson. He’s pretty darned sharp, if I do say so myself. We talk on the phone nearly every day and he’s recently picked up on the expressions (idioms) I use… and he’s started using them back to me, and saying “that’s an expression”. Please share some of your favorite expressions so I can expand my repertoire!

Ones I find myself using...

"a tough cabbage to slice" (difficult or resistant situation or thing)
I'd, you'd, he'd "better beedle along" (move quickly)
"live and learn"
"that bus has left"
"off like a herd of turtles" getting a stow start
when someone worries aloud about dubious disaster "we'll see..."
said when something disappointing happens "oh, well"
"it pancaked" an effort or project that disappointed or failed

Common Expressions & Meanings:

When I was flying, I would occasionally have a rookie with me and I would have him land the plane. Almost every rookie would take the plane too far down the runway and I would have to step in and take control of the plane and do a go around. I would explain to them not to use up so much runway without landing the plane.

After about ten new pilots doing the same thing, I would allow the new guys to still land the plane, but I would yell “Put the wheels on the runway now!”

Another expression is “Well, we made it down again. Thank you Lord.”
