"Idiots of the century"

We have a saying where I come from - only in Queensland

Read here to get the inference... http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2017/10/24/idiots-century-pose-smile-inside-queensland-croc-trap

A Queensland mayor is stunned by the stupidity of four men who swam into a baited croc trap near the scene of a fatal attack and then smiled for the camera.
Four men who swam inside a baited croc trap not far from the scene of a fatal attack are contenders for the "idiots of the century award", a Queensland mayor says.

Photos have surfaced of the men swimming around the trap and then sitting inside it, behind a trap door designed to slam shut if a croc takes the bait.

The photos were taken at the Port Douglas Marina, not far from where disoriented dementia sufferer Anne Cameron, 79, was taken by a 4.3-metre croc less than two weeks ago.

The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection is investigating and the men could each face fines of $15,000 if convicted of tampering with the trap.

LoL^

My ex BF went scuba diving after seeing JAWS in 1975. Not that the move itself was idiotic, but he was an idiot. When I asked him wasn't he more aware of the possibility of shark attack he said, "I didn't think about it". Which makes sense because you need brains to think and he didn't have any. :sentimental:

Warrigal, I was married to one of those idiots. No, not the specific idiots in the croc trap, but an idiot who was always doing things like that. I learned to look uninvolved and blasé when onlookers commented about the moron who was doing something incredibly stupid, like walking within a foot of bison in a herd at Yellowstone.

I wonder why it's always the little old lady with dementia who gets killed, not the idiots.

You can't qualify for a Darwin Award unless you remove yourself from the gene pool.
These idiots are at best future winners. Surely it is only a matter of time.

There is a mountain nearby.

Every year there are people who have to be rescued because they get into trouble climbing . The rescuers have to put themselves in danger and yet these people don't get fined.

We have a river which people use to go tubing. Even with warnings, few seasons go by without a near drowning, sadly, some actually do drown. Alcohol plus lack of flotation device equals same old same old.

I assume there were crocs in the area, before people started to build homes there. And the intruding crocs had to come from a connected area, where crocs were allowed to live. So again, why did you build homes in a croc infested area?

A friend says you'll never go wrong if you assume people are stupid. Remember the woman runner who was killed and eaten by a mountain lion in California a few years ago? She was one of the many people who buy or build homes in wildlife habitat areas. No sympathy from me. Same with people who build homes in outlying areas and then complain when deer eat their landscaping. D'oh.

Camper 6, I live in the foothills of a mountain range that is popular with hikers. People who get in trouble and require rescue are billed for the cost of the rescue services. Too bad they can't bill according to how stupid someone was when they got in trouble, but that's probably difficult to factor. What never ceases to surprise me is people who get separated from their children. One woman said her daughter is just one of those kids who won't listen. Don't take a hardheaded kid into wilderness areas, simple as that. It's not worth risking the life of rescue personnel for stupidity.

Saltwater crocodiles were on the point of extinction last century because of hunting for skins. They are now a protected species and their numbers have recovered at the same time that population numbers in the far north have grown. Studies have shown that they travel long distances over a year both out to sea and in the estuaries and rivers. Visitors to north Queensland and the Northern Territory are advised to be very careful when approaching water, especially after dark. It is a local joke that they only take dumb Yanks and foolish German tourists but crocs aren't fussy who they eat. They are very cunning too and have been known to stalk humans.

Where a large croc is making a nuisance of itself, it is captured and relocated. Suspected man eaters are killed, if only to check the stomach for human parts. This is why the croc trap was out in the story. An old lady was missing, presumed eaten.

Far north Queensland has many water borne horrors - crocs basking near the beach, sharks in the sea and all kinds of poisonous stingers floating mindless in the clear blue water. Summer is particularly dangerous. Stick to the swimming pools for safety sake if you ever decide to visit.

I assumed these were fresh water crocs ( No, I don't know the difference between gaters and crocs. If you're getting eaten by it, it doesn't really matter.) I could never understand why people carved lots out of a swamp, and live 3 feet from a canal. Then get all flustered when somebody gets eaten.
Since the fine is $15,000, it seems humans inside the trap happens frequently. Design a "fool" proof trap, which catches any large animal. Even though humans would be totally safe inside, there is that croc bait.

Fuzz, we do have freshwater species of crocodile. We refer to them as freshies and they are much smaller than the salties.
Their snouts are designed for catching and eating fish. They are no threat to humans.

Salties are very dangerous as this slightly outdated account of fatalities shows.

We do not have any species of alligators even though we have a River named the East Alligator River in the NT.

Expectedly , you have fresh and salt water Aussies. They are extremely cunning and devious in search of their prey. They often hunt in packs. We found that they have mutated from the main herd, by a marked increased in blood alcohol levels. Further study of these Aussies is warranted.
