If I had no television....

I thought so.

That's an appealing hobby (imo).
I'm too old now, but when younger I use to go to towns that had disasters so no phone service as Cell towers was torn down also. We could radio out to other hams in other towns about what was needed there, & also helped families get in touch with other loved ones.

Several times I ran phone patches to guys on the USS Enterprise over in the gulf. I could hook my receiver & transmitter to the phone line & the guys would give me a phone number to call & that way they had 2-way communications with loved ones. When one was done talking they had to say "over" so the other one knew to start taking.

I also built a lot of my ham equipment.

That's awesome, man.

I spent almost 20 years without a television. So when I moved here 3 years ago I didn't have one. After about 6 months my boyfriend bought me one so he could watch it when he is here. I watch now, but not all the time. I like to read if I am not on the computer.

Tv, Radio, Pc-i am lost without these demanding items.
Were the first generation to have TV, for better or worse.
Were the first generation to have the financial ability to purchase records (the Devil's Music).

The PC became part of our life as we mature; we mistrusted it, then like a drug addict
it was a must have -so I can fritter my life away.

I watch very little network/commercial TV any more other than the news. Why watch all those commercials when you don't have to? I stream everything else, but I do waste too much time watching YouTube videos, and YouTube is getting out of hand with all the commercials. I guess I could eliminate that problem by subscribing, but I'm reluctant to get another subscription video service without getting rid of one that we already have. I hate Netflix, so they may be on the chopping block. We watch Amazon Prime videos more than anything these days.

I have a TV but only use it occasionally for streaming movies. I read, spend time on the computer, do hobbies with music in the background, spend time with family and friends.

There is nothing in this world worse imo than TV news and talk shows. I would rather have all my teeth pulled with no anesthetic rather than listen to that swill.

I wouldn't need a TV if there were no sports. Only watch Euro & English football (soccer), NFL & college football, and NBA basketball. All other sports are just plain boring. News is depressing.

I spend time on the computer and read physical books because I like the feel of paper.

Read more. They say not to have a TV in the bedroom but that's the only TV I have. I find it relaxing to watch TV before bed. The cats are fed, the litter box is cleaned. Everything is checked turned off and locked. And I'm ready to relax and watch TV. And the alarm is set it I work the next day.

I would spend more time at the gym and walking around the lake. I try to do that anyway. I can only take so much of the shows that feature political commentary. I can only spend time on my computer for a couple of hours in the morning and then for a few hours at night (in Seniorforums).

I'm watching crime dramas these days. They make me feel like a better person. ;)

There would be so many things to do if I had no tv.

Walk
Read
Visit family
Browsing stores for home improvement ideas (this isn't done now as much as I would like)
After doing some of the above; pick up a Tim Horton's double double coffee and sit at a picnic table down by the lake and watch the waves.

We married in 1968, we bought our first TV in 1998. My mother-in-law was hooked on daytime soap operas and as we didn't have a TV she was reluctant to visit. My wife loved her mother dearly, so we bought a TV.

The reason we never bothered with TV was because we were always out dancing, or teaching dance, or choreographing a new dance routine. My wife has always been a keen dressmaker, she made all our dance costumes and that takes up a lot of time. I have a large record collection and enjoy playing them on on old jukebox, my other love is my vintage MG car.

The computer, I have to agree, has become quite addictive, but even that I arrived late at. It was only due to Covid and the lock down. I haven't stayed in at night or the weekends since I was at school.

I may have mentioned elsewhere on the forum that I have been at my daughter's house for 2 weeks, helping out after her knee surgery and she does not have cable. I thought it would bother me, not having the TV "background noise" all day, but surprisingly I haven't missed it at all. Well...can't say at all. I do miss watching the new fall episodes of 911 and Law & Order SVU. But I'll catch up! In the meantime, it's been a real bonding time with family. We actually sit around and talk to each other! Imagine that!

I'm very, very proud to say I cut the cable some 21 years ago and don't miss "the controlling beast." I read, go for walks, sing and play my guitar, plan trips, spend time on the computer and dream about traveling again. You might say I "have a life."

I don't subscribe to cable tv because of poor programing and too many annoying commercials. I have a smart tv that streams netflix, amazon prime, youtube, HBOMAX and Hulu without commercial interruption. Perhaps it is not cost effective subscribing to the above media sources, for me I would rather watch a movie or tv series without commercial interruption.

We don't watch the news that may cause undo stress and worry.

A lesson for ya'all! My late wife had a cousin who loved to watch his 12 channels of sports. He loved it so much that he watched it from early morning until he went to bed. Oh, there was the hockey season, then the football season, then there were ball games and in between there was always the golf channel. He used to teach school and enjoyed photography and painting. Over the years, he gave all of this up and concentrated on watching those 12 sports channels. He was encouraged/warned by his friends to get out for a walk or go to the little gym they had 1 floor up. He never did.

Just got a letter from his daughter. He has been readmitted to the hospital again. He came home to his assisted living place but did not feel well due to shortness of breath. Paramedics transported him last Saturday night to the hospital again. He has been put on a liquid diet and tested for Covid (results negative). The plan now is to move him to a care home when he gets better.

There is a lesson here. Watching TV all day is a death wish to my way of thinking. We humans are made to keep moving. As they say, "use it or lose it." This morning I went outside and found a sheet of ice all over the place. Ah! The joys of being a Canuck! Did I just give up walking. Nada! I went inside, took off my tonque, parka and heavy booths and put on my running shoes and walked the hallways. Why? Because I don't want to join that cousin in the care home.
