If you were swimming in cash, would you buy expensive stuff?

I would hire a pastry chef to make dozens of wonderful pastries a few mornings a week. At least two dozen. Then I would hand them out on a street corner to make people feel good as they start their day.

I'd love to say I'm filthy stinking rich but I'm going to have to settle for 2-out-of-3......

If I became filthy stinking AND rich, I can't see my a$$ lolling in a villa with my billionaire friends on the French Riviera. Not my scene.

I CAN see, however, having a modest summer cabin in the mountains, a modest winter cottage somewhere warm and a couple of longish vacations every year somewhere exotic but not necessarily palatial.

I would hire someone to clean behind the toilet, scrub the bathtub and shower, dust, wash the windows and, especially, cook for me.

Ahhhh....paradise.

That first sentence cracked me up. Thanks for the laugh.

I have to add a more expensive answer to my first answer. Only I am not adding stuff but adding a person.

If I was very rich I would hire myself a valet, a gentleman's gentleman, a Jeeves. He would take care of my house, cook most meals, manage my social calendar, arrange events, handle the various details of modern life, and, most importantly, be discrete in regards to my female companions.

I would invest it all in a huge research center focused solely on coming up with a hypnotic way to make all mosquitoes, houseflies, gnats, and all pests (including some human ones) not want to have anything to do with us ☺️

This is what one of my favorite writers thinks about it and I agree:

"I know little kids are like, 'When I grow up I wanna be rich so I can buy a hundred cars,' but my lifelong dream is to get rich so I can afford top-notch in-home health care."
~~from Quietly Hostile by Samantha Irby

(And one of the most U.S.A. quotes ever. :( )

Yes, I'd buy expensive stuff. But it would be expensive stereo playback for my music. Other than that, nah. I might enjoy a bespoke suit though, hmmmmm

Cars etc? Never been a car person. Always focused on getting from A to B.

I’d buy travel insurance but would be fairly content that if something went wrong and the insurance company failed me, I’d still have a roof over my head when I got home.

I buy travel insurance as a matter of course before I set off abroad.. I do have an E111 card which allows me standard free care in all European countries.. but if something more serious happened.. and I had to be flown home , or a major operation then that's what the Travel Insurance covers. However that's a pittance compared to the price of Private Medical Insurance in the UK.. which for me would be very expensive monthly..

I had it until recently, as part of a joint subsidised policy with my estranged husband through his work... but when we separated he cancelled it..

At my age there is not a lot I would want for myself and DW but it would be enjoyable to donate to charities and give to family and friends. A home on the beach and a nice cabin in the mountains would sure be on my wish list. Also some upscale travel would be enjoyable while we are still able to get around.

With a bit more greedy reflection since as noted, this guy is swimming in cash, I'll add a third residence to Pacific Grove and South Lake Tahoe, and that will be San Francisco with a residence at the north end of town anywhere in the Marina District.

I'd spend a few months in Europe. Then sell my house and move to a modest home at the beach. I'd hire a cleaning service to come in a couple of times a month and someone to take care of my property.

At this point, I don't need or want much other than traveling every so often. I'd also like to make arrangements to expire as comfortably as possible. Whatever is left will go to family.

I have been thinking on the topic of being fabulously wealthy a bit more. It would be really comforting to know that I or my DW would never have to worry about ending up in some crummy nursing home where you would get questionable care. You could hire all the help you needed to be able to remain in your home. That would be worth a lot to me as I sometimes worry this could happen to us down the road.

Depending on how much cash came my way, I'd probably eat at least one meal a day at a fancy place.
Somedays breakfast, sometimes lunch and of course, Late Dinning.

It there is any left over, I got my eye on a Rolex Yacht-Master ll,
but would settle for a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Oystersteel.

Sometimes, you just have to settle.

Excellent idea. I will use my new fortune for that fancy nursing home too.

Before I get there, I’m going to buy the latest iPhone. It’s a lighter weight and that’s the heaviest thing in my purse, so I must need it.

I guess I'm just cheap. If I had a $billion or two, would I buy expensive stuff? Would I buy a Rolls Royce, or a Honda? Is a Rolls going to get your down the street faster? Nope, wouldn't get a Rolls.. I now have an $8.97 Timex, so would I buy a Rolex? Well, 3:30 PM is the same on all watches. Maybe I'm just cheap. But if you were swimming in cash, would you buy the expensive stuff?
Absolutely. I like quality things. They are better made and do last longer and I'm happier. That's what it's all about. I am worth it and I am unapologetically an expensive lady. :giggle:
