Immigrants are flooding into the U.S.

I don’t have a problem with legal immigration but what’s going on at the Mexican border is one of desperation. I think some of it is due to our policies and the demand for drugs in our country. I think it would be better to win the war on drugs putting the drug lords out of business and make better policies in these countries.

These people are leaving their countries because it’s totally inhospitable for them in part due to our doings. They just want a place to live & work.

Why is our country so awful at fixing the root problem

"Why is our country so awful at fixing the root problem"

Because it/we refuse to recognise/acknowledge it.

Examining the topic with a longer time horizon can be interesting. Considering that economies that grow are the ones that thrive, and demographics drive the economy, I've been less critical of immigration than some. I take the view that it's not "new arrivals take a slice of the pie" and that's the end of the story. They grow the pie, so there's more to it. Of course legal immigration is the way to manage that, but when are the laws of this country, any of our laws, really "right". In the mean time, the geography of north America gives us a world advantage from a demographic perspective. Yes, porous borders might be "good". But to understand why, you can't just take whatever outrage-driven "news" gets pushed to you. If you'd like to explore long term demographics and how those affect economies, you can read The End of the World is Just Beginning, by Peter Zeihan. It's quite surprising. The demographic future of China is not looking so good. We've seen how the economy of Japan has stagnated over many decades. Looking long term is often overlooked, but turns out to be pretty interesting.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

What's this NIMBY stuff? We need to find a way. We're here. Except for Native Americans, we got here from somewhere else.

Have we gotten so smug and self-satisfied that we insist upon keeping it all for ourselves? Can we not find a way to share and to welcome those who weren't lucky enough to be born here?

Apparently, yes. We have gotten smug and self-satisfied. Repeat after me: entitled. We are entitled and selfish.

I'm not repeating any such thing. Maybe you're entitled and selfish, but I'm not. And Native Americans got here via a land bridge from Asia btw.

We can certainly increase the levels of legal immigration. They are far too low. But we cannot and should not open our borders to all comers. This creates economic and social havoc. How is it fair to a young engineer from Bangalore who wishes to emigrate to the US -- and who pursues legal avenues to do so -- to let millions of people in before him or her just because they were able to walk across a shallow river?

We need a leader that will advise all the illegal immigrants that have come here or are still coming across our borders that they have broken our laws and cannot remain in our country. We should hunt them down and send them back where they came from. This will cost lots of money, but they should be required to work in prison camps to earn the money to deport them. We have to make this experience painful, so others will not follow. If they have kids, the kids stay with them, and the parent(s) must earn enough to deport the family back where they came from.

We have many people in government and in the media telling the world we have "open borders." They might just as well say COME ON UP! WE'LL TAKE YOU IN, NO MATTER WHAT!!!.

You are absolutely right. Every since our current POTUS put his crack troubleshooter VPOTUS on the case, the border has been sealed tighter than a drum. I condemn all who say otherwise, and the border problem is really their fault.

I like @Gary O' have a grandson of Mexican heritage. He also has Japanese heritage. His bio Dad famliy is from Mexico, on his mothers side, a grandmother who came here as the bride of an American who fell in love, when he was serving our country in a war!

Does this little boy, 9 years old, deserve you looking at him sideways, judging, wondering. NO! he does not. We all have a mixed heritage if you go back and look. I came from Dutch and German roots yet I am an American. Please keep that in mind when you think about when you see or meet people. We all got here in different ways.

When I go out with my grandson and introduce him as my grandson, people think it could not be true. We may not look alike but I love him just as much as you love your grandchildren.

It's obvious that the government actually want them here, as they are falling over backwards to make them feel welcome.
I can't figure out why.
The government is the politicians in actuality who consider politics as their means of status and employment, and they will do the bidding of anyone who puts them in office, and they are those with money who benefit from open borders. That is neither you and I on both counts.

With a due respect I don't think this is the point.....it has little or nothing to do with skin tone, blood type, or continent of origin........inviting someone into your house is vastly different from having them smash your windows or kick your door down.

Prison camps? Sickening. No other comment.

Many of today's migrants are overly and overtly religious, and they are fleeing countries that have been torn apart by theocratic autocratic leaders. Religion played an integral part in destroying those countries. But many of today's "refugees" are not seeking freedom from religious rule and oppression; in fact, that's what they want when they come to the U.S., and that isn't good for our country.

Our Founding Fathers fled the influence of the church in England because they saw the harm it was doing and all the corruption involved in the government. They emerged out of the Age of Enlightenment where science and reason were highly regarded.

If we get too many religious people here in the U.S., we're not going to have prosperity; we're going to have oppression and stagnation, which appears to be where we're heading.

Good question. We need a global solution, and that requires compromise and leadership to make it happen. Not the kind of thing we see from our lawmakers...

In the end it comes back to us the voters who elect them and we have a lot of trouble agreeing as to what should be done...
I don't think we need a global solution, and if we went for one I doubt the problems would ever be solved. But we absolutely need a leader who will address the issue demandingly, and a congress that will stop politicizing it and take action.

I'm in favor of using better vetting technology and also speeding up the immigration process. It's ridiculous that good people have to wait 15-20 years and spend tens of thousands of dollars to become a US citizen.

this is what we're told so that we'll except these people into our country.. ''they do the work Brits won't do''... not true. The fact is most come here already very aware of how to work the system.. arrive with kids knowing they will get social security and public housing because they have children with them ... and join up with many from their homeland who are very wise on how to milk the system, and in the meantime our crime rate goes sky high ....

Not to say all immigrants do this.. I know many who have a job and live in private rented accommodation, those have come to improve their lives ..those are the ones we need.. but they are in the minority... that's fact!!
I read something over twice since I could not believe what I read. A Ukrainian family arrived in a town in my province with 10 children. I am not lying: 10 children. They came from a village in the Ukraine.

Furthermore, another family is coming with another 10 children. Can you imagine the plane fare? In Canada most families have less than 2 children. Many have none at all. I can't believe it 10 children. They certainly haven't heard about birth control or maybe they aren't interested?

When I saw this photo, I was sure it was about 3 families standing together. Man! Was I wrong! It is just mama and papa and 10 kids.

I completely understand the frustration... but.. in this instance they are fleeing danger or war... what war are the Albanians with 10 kids fleeing when they arrive on our doorsteps.. or Romanians or or any amount of them from that part of the world !! ( rhetoric question obviously)

What really bothers me with this border mess, is the fact that our citizens who live honorable lives down there may be forced to take the law into their own hands. I recall one Arizona family stating that it was terrible to host a cook-out with shot guns and rifles at the ready. This alone, should be a wake up call to our politicians. Not just those who live in serve in the Southwest.
