Immortality? A question for you.

Do you think humans will ever become immortal through enhancements from technology? I do think so. Maybe people will live to be several hundred years old or just last forever. Vaccines will be perfected to prevent disease and if our bodies and minds don't wear out anything is possible. What do you think about this? Do you see it as a possibility for the future of human kind? What's your take on this.

Goodness me, that's a big question. Pure guess work on this one...

I say yes, but only partially to do with vaccines, etc. I think it'll be a form of cybernetics that will enable it. Just as we can do today with pacemakers, new knees and hips etc, it may be possible to maintain the complex chemistry and biology of our bodies into some kind of hybrid of man and machine.

Let's face it, if we're ever going to reach distant planets, we're going to need something to be done. A cybernetic hybrid of some sort is far more likely to enable that. Although I do recall reading an article that said a robot in human form will be the first thing we get to distant (outside the solar system) planets. So perhaps not so outlandish.

It is possible that people would not want immortality because of some of the possible changes in society that have already been mentioned.

However, they might be forced into it for that "healthy workforce" that Feywon mentioned. Most likely other genetic alterations would accompany this immortality

Interesting question and some scientific research is working on it.

If aging is seen as a disease, then it is a whole body disease. All of our organs are involved. It must be something that happens at the level of our cells. Some organisms such as amoeba and jelly fish do not exhibit cellular aging. They reproduce by cell division rather than by sexual means.

This is where the research is focussed. What is the secret to cell replacement that would allow all parts of our body to reproduce/repair endlessly without aging. Could the human lifespan be extended to 150? 200? and would that be a good thing?

Similar threads have been posed herein before. I essentially posted, indeed I want to "exist" forever. And will need to briefly relate religious reasons why I lean so. Thus bare with the following.

That is why I choose to accept Christ Jesus's offer despite tending to dismiss much dominant well-intentioned Christian church dogma, especially inerrancy. Also why I attend regular Christian religious services despite that being so uncool with many today. Just as Acts 2:42 states "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." I will not abandon fellowship of myriad well meaning faithful other good humans that follow dogmas I don't tend to fully accept just because they don't have the background I now have in this science telecom era. Nor because there have always been many followers that talk the talk but don't walk the walk.

From study and research of Old Testament Bible scripture in unique ways, I'll speculate Jesus's coming was the last attempt by Ultimate Intelligent Entities, UIEs, with limited powers to affect we often warmongering, immoral Earth monkeys. Limited powers that don't resort to impossible unlimited actions without forces that is essentially magic, created by churches with agendas during the pre-science eras. As such, can argue for the possibility that Earth is a remote galactic zoo. Adam and Eve were not the first homo sapiens per Young Earth Christian beliefs that science today clearly destroys via evolution science and the physical fossil record.

Instead they may have been the result of UIE DNA enhancement engineering of normal humans to attend to biological gardens on the planet they used in a list of ways. In our own coming future, we will soon be able to produce food including protein sources, vitamins, medicines, and more by having plants, including trees grow such directly as the Genesis "apple" scripture vaguely relates. Descendants of Adam & Eve lived hundreds of years for millennia until increasing intermating with ordinary humans diluted their recessive DNA.

They did not live even longer because they no longer had access to the garden with its "Tree of Life" with chemicals impossible to manufacture within Earth creature bodies. How much longer they might have lived with those nutrients is unknowable, but I would be surprised if vastly longer unless not purely organic.

In my speculative view, more likely given salvation, is our neural system's complex oscillating electromagnetic brain wave fields are saved into mostly non-organic impedance duplicating containers that duplicate our own brains. Within such containers, have developed a hypothesis that organic chemical brains may be needed at the brain cores as the only way such AIs can achieve actual singularity level consciousness as we understand such. Ancient UIEs in the universe given billions of years, much less past eternity, would certainly have enormous reason and time to develop such.

I do understand why many, considering their own limited and or flawed and tired degenerated body lives might be content to just die with eternal non-existence. I however find life, existence, and our amazing planet and its life to be endlessly fascinating I could live forever enjoying. Especially in an advanced science era where humans live in harmony with others and this precious blue water world.

I believe that the body wasn't meant to be permanent or it would never start to decay in the first place. Also even if there's things in place to keep us alive there would be too much overpopulation and no control over the elements or climate change.

the blue print perhaps was there in the beginning ; we just stopped referring to it eventually and thought we'd found more exciting ways??

I agree with @MarciKS. Immortality may be possible, but I'm not sure even today's grandchildren will be able to survive climate change, much less older people. I certainly don't want to face it. I'll be content with living to 90 y/o and dying in my sleep.

Regardless of immortality, humans even given current lifespans already have a horrendous overpopulation problem without any obvious painless solutions that if not addressed will result in not only our specie's doom but also much of the fragile planet's unique life. In Western societies, we may be able to limit numbers of children couples have but will never in much of the Third World. Without families with children, many humans, especially those without otherwise wealth, would find their futures meaningless. There is no way to change that without painful sacrifices that would be greatly resisted and uncontrollable.

I'll speculate that eventually given already out of the bag CRISPR DNA technology, a rogue group or nation will develop and unleash a global viral plague far worse than the current one.

I guess I'm a big fan of the "Nothing lasts forever (Except Twinkies and cockroaches)" philosophy.
If history has taught us anything, it's that history hasn't taught us anything.
I think we have been and will always be our own worst enemy.
With humans, sooner or later sh*t happens, only now, it's just bigger and more destructive.

This made me think of the 'joke' i've made when discussing why we haven't had confirmed visits from aliens, that there is some kind of quarantine with perhaps scientists being granted permits to study us.
This YouTube video elaborates.
