we are moving toward a cashless society. at some point we will all need a debit card or a card you can use in your smart phone to pay for goods. also checks will become obsolete. whether we like it or agree with it...this is what's on the horizon. if you choose not to jump on the bandwagon i guess you don't get to buy anything. sucks but this is what technology gets us.

Coffee shop near me gives customers a percentage off if paying with cash.
Apparently they are charged a fee for processing debit card transactions (but they can’t charge customers additional fees for using debit cards)

I'm 100% opposed to a "cashless society" .... Aside from the ballpark, I have not come across any business that refused to take cash - yet.

I was waiting for an order today at Arby's and the man ahead of me paid with a $20.00 dollar bill and the man at the register had to check to see if it was counterfeit. He had to take it to someone else to check it before giving the elderly man his change. It did hold up others waiting to order but I guess that is what they do with some bills.
@MACKTEXAS so far we still take all 3 here. Some places don't take checks and some don't take cards.

I have not written a check in any store for at least 10 years, probably longer. I use my credit card when I can, to avoid carrying much cash, and pay the bill in full at the end of the month.
Dollar Tree only accepts cash or debit cards, so I pay cash. I have a debit card because my bank provides one to all account holders, but the only time I ever use it is to withdraw cash at the ATM machine.
The rest of this is strange:
It was at least 20 years ago that Walmart started processing checks (debiting our accounts) at the register, and handing the checks back to the customer. It seemed odd, but I understood it. About that same time, my mother started developing Alzheimer's. She had always paid by check in stores - and I still remember her telling us, "I wrote a check at Walmart, and the dingbat at the register handed my check back to me at the end. Now how dumb is that?"

I do get the convenience aspect of plastic, just don't want it to be FORCED and the only option.
