Please note that the example provided constitutes a false analogy for the following reasons.

1. Abraham knew that God would resurrect Isaac.

2. Abraham knew that Isaac was the one through whom God had promised to bless all nations.

So Abraham was sure that Isaac's death would not be not like the ones that the heathens offered which they deemed permanent and which which God Abraham's God had clearly condemned as evil.

17By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac on the altar. He who had received the promises was ready to offer his one and only son, 18even though God had said to him, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.” 19Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and in a sense, he did receive Isaac back from death.…

Interesting.

My take on the story is that it was one that moved Judaism forward, away from human sacrifice. The ram substituted for the life of the innocent boy. In my mind it is a fore cursor to the crucifixion story where Jesus becomes the innocent human sacrifice that substitutes for all of sinful mankind.

The thought is just my own interpretation of embedded symbolism. I doubt that many thought this way during the Middle Ages when people were being burnt at the stake.

Your understanding of the symbolism is accurate. Abraham was indeed a prophetic shadow of God and Isaac of Jesus.

About Israel practicing human sacrifice before they were given the Mosaic law, well, please note that Israel was described as needing to avoid learning and imitating the ways of the Canaanites. Meaning that they were as yet not practicing what these nations practiced and had to avoid imitating them.

Deut. 12:29-31):
When the Lord your God cuts off before you the nations whom you go in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, take heed that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do likewise.’ You shall not do so to the Lord your God; for every abominable thing which the Lord hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.

I would love to watch it, but don't get HBO.
There are so many religions in the world; sometimes the line between them and a cult can get pretty blurred. It's probably just boils down to one's objective view.
 
I was raised in the Lutheran church and had to go to Sunday school every week. For 3 years during 7-9 grades we had to go to classes for 2 hours once a week so we could be confirmed. I really hated this after being in school all day. My parents thought they were doing the right thing by instilling religion.

I decided not to do this to my children. It was miserable. I raised my kids to be good, kind people. I no longer believe and realize that religion is a big money maker, a great way to control people and look at all the religious wars and innocent people killed because of it.
 
It should be up to the parents to decide unless whatever it is, is illegal to do so, even when the parents do it. Otherwise go to court.
 
It’s not religious organizations that are the problem, they are simply providing a service that parents unknowingly subscribe to.
