Israeli Mother and Daughter Scam, Abuse Senior Citizens

R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
A 28-year-old woman and her 64-year-old mother have been arrested and charged with conspiracy, fraud and abuse of elders after they were suspected of employing a "home care" scam in which they would intimidate or force the seniors into signing over their pensions, houses, bank accounts and belongings. The pair are said to have bilked millions of shekels out of their victims.

See? It isn't just here that you have to be on guard ...

I just wonder how much of a role senility / Alzheimer's had to play in this - if the victims had no family left (the article mentioned some of them were turned into the streets) and their judgement was clouded by age or infirmity ... or if they were culturally conditioned to trust people like that.

We are no better than animals as the worst of us prey on the weak. In the wild, at least it's just a natural food chain. We supposedly "civilized" beings should know better.

That's why I've always maintained that the difference between humans and animals is just skin-deep - only a thin layer of civility and social conditioning lies between us, and it's all too easy to see examples of that layer being ripped away.

Well, I have always been a believer in the goodness of human beings, and I really think that most of us are caring people. However, sort of like the proverbial sore thumb, the ones that use people like this , stand out and give everyone else a bad name. Look at the reactions of all of us on here; we totally agree that this is deplorable and that the person that did it should have to pay for it , one way or another. Why some people have this integrity, and caring heart for other people (and animals) , and some seem to be heartless and only looking out for themself, is a question that has always been pondered by people the world over.

Religion is not the answer, much of the most horrible abuse of people has been carried out by religious zealots. Education and money is not the answer either, because this uncaring attitude is found in both rich and poor people, educated and illiterate.
The answer is found in a persons character, his heart, and his attitude, and it is a part of us for our lifetime, regardless of external circumstances.

And, as for animals, these characteristics exist in animals also. Horses, for example. They can tell if a rider is a beginner, and if they are insecure, and different horses respond differently. A "babysitter horse" will say to itself that this person doesn't know what they are doing, and they will calmly pussyfoot down the trail with them, never once shying or speeding up. The "take advantage" type of horse, will immediately think to himself that he can now do whatever he wants because this rider doesn't know how to control a horse, and he is apt to turn around and gallop home with the hapless rider hanging on for dear life and screaming bloody murder.

It is too bad that the world is full of selfish scammers like these women, but, it is, and all we can do is watch out for ourselves, and try not to be taken in by them.

You have to watch your back for sure, especially when you're older. My mother didn't have much money, but she had some pieces of jewelry that were handed down to her from relatives, etc. After she broke her hip and her health declined, she had a part time cleaning lady come in a couple of hours a week to do heavy housework, like vacuuming, etc.

She was living in an apartment. Even though she was smart enough not to have anything out in the open that was of any value when a stranger was in her apartment, she found that a watch was missing from her drawer.

Not to say anything against this company, they may truly be reputable, but I hear ads on the radio for 'visiting angels' (and I think, yeah...right), who come in to assist the elderly, clean, cook, etc. I'm always suspicious of letting folks like that into the home of an elderly/sickly person. You hear not only of theft, but stories of physical abuse, stealing of medications, etc. It's so sad, even nursing homes are not safe, they have employees that will scam you. This mother and daughter team.....

Sometimes (SOMETIMES!) while driving along the freeway with all our friends, I suddenly realize that society works! Everyone is cruising along peacefully, keeping a safe distance from each other, passing kindly, giving room to merging traffic and just being cooperative . . . until that crazed maniac comes speeding up from nowhere weaving in and out, tailgating, nearly causing wrecks or actually causing a horrible accident and my revery is squashed in a instant. But, it's true . . . we are all usually safe around the watering hole; keeping an eye out for the predators...

Here in SE Florida that is a common scam unfortunately. All kinds of varieties on how the run it too and one way they can get away with it is that the victim is down here and their kids and grandkids are out of state and sometimes do not check in regularly. Sometimes, they have even parted ways from some past feud.

Back in the hurricanes of 04,05 there were older folks trapped in high rise apartments and no one knew they were there and the community was not organized well enough to do proper searches. After that, the county created six Emergency Operations Areas to do health & welfare missions from a central place. I got into this through my job and helped out for about three years but we never deployed.

Training was fun though and they are still at it.
