I've gone over to the Dark Side....

......no, I haven't taken up VooDoo or human sacrifice.

I bought a smart phone. Not a genius phone, but it is smarter than I am. Heck, that's not hard to do....some days a potato is smarter than me.

I know I've always said I'm happy with a dumb phone, but my dumb phone has been getting dumber and dumber....and dumber and dumber. So I went off to the phone store to buy another dumb phone. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but when I walked out, I owned a smart phone. It was like being at a tent revival or a multi-level marketing conference.....you keep saying no-no-no and you still walk out properly saved and with a box of beauty products you're supposed to sell to your friends. I walked out with a smart phone instead.

So far I have mixed feelings about it. It's big and clumsy, won't fit in my pocket well, and it's always locking itself and I have to punch in a security code to do anything. On the other hand, I LOOOOOVE the voice-to-text mode. Since the younger generation in my family would rather have their fingernails pulled out than to have to actually talk to anyone on the phone, the voice-to-text is ever so much easier than pecking around on those tiny keys.

Time will tell, but I'm afraid I have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

I had much the same experience a few months ago - with equal reluctance. However, a plus I didn't expect: when internet goes out at home I can tether to my phone, and I'm back on line. They have their benefits!

That is awesome, Jujube, and in a week or so, you would probably never think of parting with your new smartphone. When my daughter brought me my first iPhone, I had a terrible time learning to use it at first, but once I got the hang of it, I loved it !
Since it is much smaller than my iPad, I don’t do things like surf the web with my phone, but I can do that if it were absolutely necessary.
Mostly, I use it as a phone and a camera, but I can also read books with the Kindle app, and check to see what the weather is going to be like.
I get alerts when I am out and about, and the weather is going to turn bad; so that is handy, too.

One day, we decided to take a new route to get to Sam’s Club, missed a turn or two, and soon were totally lost out in the middle of ......somewhere.
I got the phone out of my purse, pulled up the map app so I could see where I was, and then I used the app to find our way back to Sam’s Club.
If I hadn’t had that smartphone, I would probably still been wandering around on some back road, totally lost.

Congrats, Jujube! They make some that will fit in your pocket. I have one (2"x4"). But try to do touch screen on it for the internet. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Like Loosey said though, that little bugger can be used to fire up the internet on the desktop.

Mama and I got matching Pantech Breeze 3 flip phones back in early 2011 from AT&T and still have them......we don't text or access the internet with them, don't share our numbers with anyone, don't use the camera feature and turn them back off when we arrive back home and use the land line.

She turns hers on and carries it every time she walks out of the house but mine resides on the breakfast bar and I honestly can't remember when the last time was that I actually carried it.

For what we initially got them for (emergencies) they are all that we need.

JuJube, may I offer my condolences.

One can only hope that you don't take the next step - learning to lock your doors and regulate your coffee pot with that infernal device.

There are help groups available - PM me if you're interested.

Smart phones can do a lot of different things. Turn on lights, home security and many more things. I fell into the trap about three years ago. I admit, I’m hooked. The camera feature is what I use the most, and to turn on certain lights in the house.

I can just hear my grandpa saying, David, get off your ass and turn the damn lights on.

Jujube - Congratulations on joining the 21 century! I suppose I could live without my iPhone, I can't imagine why I would want to. Sometimes I even use it to call a friend. :)

I like the ability to text on my phone. I think you have to have a smart phone for that. It's the main way my family communicates with each other.

Oh No --- you've become " one of them " ........ ! LOL I know the feeling of walking out of a store , your head spinning and that little voice in your head whispering
WHAT DID YOU JUST BUY ?????? Then panic sets in. *BUT* a few weeks down the road , you'll look back and wonder how you ever lived without it !!!

Condolences, jujube. I had a smart phone. I was chained to it. Every time it beeped or chirped or rang, I'd drop whatever I was doing to attend to its demands. It didn't fit in my pocket so I had a thingie that attached to my pocket for carrying it around. Looked as silly as a fanny pack. The phone was smarter than I am, and that alone was annoying.

Then I dropped it on a marble floor and was liberated because it would cost more to fix than to buy a new phone. I went back to a dumb phone. A flip phone that fits in my pocket. It sends and receives calls and texts. And it fits in my pocket.
