That reminds me, one of the dumbest questions in my life was asked by myself!

A relative had twins, boy and girl. I went to see the babies.

I was young, had no prior experience with twins but well over the age to have known better.

I asked her, "Are they identitical?"
 
Funniest I ever heard was a few of us noticed a nice car with a Hawaii license plate in the parking lot of our senior center in ABQ NM & we’re looking at it when a gentleman comes up to it getting ready to leave; we chat a bit and one woman asks him in all seriousness, “Did you drive all the way?”

On some maps, the distance between them looks very small. :rolleyes:

Perhaps they had flown in on a plane, and 'just' wanted to have a pleasant day trip, "across" the bridge...

They were Americans, I presume they'd flown to NZ unless they'd sailed of course.... . I can't remember what my friend told them, I wish I could...

Hey, Ruthanne (one of my favourite characters in Northern Exposure) we do speak a kind of corrupted English in Australia. Most of the things we prattle on about would need translating though!!! I guess it's the same in the States and definitely in Gt Britain. Owt, Nowt about that. That;s fair dinkum and dead set ripperpoody and a fantoogly. Hmmm!!!

Yup -- when I was young I worked in Washington, D.C. for a while (due to my husband's being stationed there) and I got asked about passports a time or two, along with whether or not I, coming from New Mexico, was a US citizen. And, the oft repeated comment from someone about how my English was surprisingly good inasmuch I had come from a foreign country that spoke Spanish.

That was back in the mid to late 60s, so maybe all that has gotten better since the coming of the internet.
 
Oh, and a couple more:

Years ago, I went to a McDonald's; as I can't hack steaming-hot coffee, I asked the cashier to put a couple of ice cubes in it. Her puzzled response: "Ice cubes- is that anything like ice?"

More recently, another fast-food place- I asked the guy if they had any non-carbonated beverages.. and had to explain what "carbonated" meant.
