The Hakone volcano , which is only around 50 miles from the city of Tokyo, has been showing signs of waking up in the last few weeks, and volcano experts are now saying that there is an excellent chance of an eruption.
Since Japan had another volcano erupt unepectedly this year, killing many of the hikers along the side of the mountain; authorities are not taking any chances with this one, and have closed the area to the public.
Hakone volcano has been inactive for the last 800 or so years; so the last time it actually erupted would have been back in the Middle Ages.
Now, the ground is getting hot, steam is pouring out, and also, the ground is rising. Since this volcano is so close to Tokyo, it could very well do a lot of damage if it does erupt.
When Mt. St. Helens erupted, the ash drifted all the way across Washington State, and into Idaho, and even into Western Montana.
That is several hundred miles; so many areas around Japan could be affected by this eruption, depending on which way the wind was blowing when and if it erupts.
