Jury duty summons in the mail again

Thurs in the mail to my surprise I got another summons for jury duty this time the week starting Oct 10th
In 2019 I got my 1st one which I could not serve due to the chronic condtion I have in my right partial knee. Its Chrondroncalcinosis,which is buildup of calcium crystals in cartilage of the joints It becomes painful for me to sit for long periods of time I still have this condition
My doctor is mailing me the excuse, will send it back to the jury office. I called yesterday talked with agent who was very nice, explained my problem. She was baffled why I got another summons as well
This is ridiculous Sue
 

What if you were destined to be on a particular jury panel? Your yay or nay could mean everything!
 
Three years ago was begging my county for jury duty, but so far have not been selected. I did serve 5 times before and only got to deliberations on one case. One other time I sat on a case, but at the end, was dismissed as an alternate. The other times was a lot of waiting around, then the litigants settled without needing a jury.

I've had this happen also Sue, even worked at the county gov't for 10yrs till I retired, and still they would send these notices...finally got ahold of Circuit Clerk who I knew, and she
removed me from the general list.
 
Have not gotten a notice in many years now. Maybe because I interact with inmates in the next county when I do a weekly bible study? Now that I am retired, I think I would like to be on a jury.
 
i had 2 summons in less than 3 months...
supposed to park 3 blocks from courthouse...no cell phones....bathroom from courtroom down in basement ..3 flights of stairs..stadium like seating..
first one was canceled...
second one...i went ..got dismissed for crying...
 
I served on jury duty many many years ago and would never want to serve again. The trial was about Rape,incest and corrupting the morals of minor.A father constantly raped his daughter.I was the yougest woman on the jury and had to explain some thing to a young male jury member,After all these years I still remember the name of the guy on trial and his address,Fortunatly after that case I got a doctors note saying I couldn't serve again.
 
I was called for jury duty. A bunch of us were hauled into the court room for the trail, but the defendant decided to take a plea agreement. That happened over and over. It made me feel like the jury were the "boogie men" used to scare defendants.
The other take away was how stupid some of the trials were. One was about a 54 year old Black prostitute- say Sue Smith, who skipped bail. The bail guys went to NYC nabbed a Sue Smith and dragged her back to Wilkes Barre, PA. The problem was this Sue Smith was 13 years old. And now, they were getting sued. They settled.

One of the major differences between the US court system and the Canadian court system is that here jurors can never be identified in any way, during or after a trial is over. No media interviews, not tell all books, no photographs of the jurors, or mention of their ages or type of employment. There is a section of the Canadian Criminal Code that prohibits all of the above from happening, and SOME jurors have been prosecuted for breaking the rules and fined.

A further difference is the use of Judge's Orders, to silence the media, during a trial. AFTER the trial is completed, the media can report the facts, but the American practice of having the defense lawyer trying the case on the courthouse steps, in front of the TV cameras, doesn't happen in Canada. Our Crown Prosecutors and Judges are not elected, they are appointed. JimB.

Somehow Canada manages to do with out bail bonds companies. Bail here is based on pledging property such as a paid off car, a house with equity, or the most common thing...A promise to appear at a later date. No cash bonds here. JimB.

Bail is the practice of releasing a person either from police custody or whilst they're going through the courts, not the sum (the bail bond) which is taken.

Anyway, bail in the UK is almost always on a person's "own recognisance", often with conditions attached. That means no money is involved. Bail will be granted automatically unless there's some reason not to give it - ie, the person might run off. If that's the case, then they'll be remanded in custody.

I served on two criminal cases, but never a civil case. The first case(1980) was a burglary & armed robbery with 2 defendants. There was so much physical evidence they should have just taken a plea deal. The second case was just a couple years ago. A parolee in possession of a stolen firearm. We were seated as a jury and trial was ready to begin, when he did take a plea, his parole was violated anyway. I don't know how much additional time he received.

From what I have been reading, Prosecutors have been offering some pretty nice plea deals for defendants to consider.

The person that was on parole and caught with a firearm was lucky to even get a plea deal offered.

How much jail time can a felon serve in county before they are sent to state prison? Here in PA, a felon can do up to 12 months, but the judge can sentence the felon to 13+ months and suspend a month or more to keep the person in County.

In Calif.: for some offenses it used to be 18 months, but in 2011 AB 109 was passed by the State in order to lesson the cost of prison operations that had been skyrocketing after the passage of the Three Strikes law in the mid 1990s. One of the goals was to keep lessor offenders from being sent to prison, instead having parole and probation violations serving in the county jails. I retired from the Sheriff's Dept. in 2012, so I didn't witness first hand what the impact was on operations. I heard from a sergeant that was assigned to the sentenced facility(GHRC) that some inmates might be serving as much as 9 years in county jail.

The one time I served I was happy to do so because it got me out of work. The waiting to be called was extremely boring, however. Eventually I sat in as an alternate for a petty burglary trial in a college dorm.

I got out of a federal summons once since I had just gotten out of the hospital for a motorcycle accident.

Finally, you can be excused from jury duty if you are past a certain age.
 
I was called once. Jury gathered and was dismissed before the trial got underway. Thankfully I had complied with my "duty" and was never called again.

I did it as a civic duty but was happy that I was never called again as I had passed the age limit that Chet mentioned.
 
I returned a jury duty questionnaire. Some people tell me they just throw them away. I thought that it is against the law not to return them. Anyways, earlier this year before I returned it by mail, I mentioned my age, and then asked them if they have bathroom hourly breaks. I asked if I could get up at any time during a trial, excuse myself and go to the bathroom. So far I haven't heard from them as of yet. Knock on wood!

After you reach a certain age in NJ, we can request not to serve. It is always granted.
 
Doctors have written for me reasons to not be on jury duty twice. Severe depression both times.
