Just had an earthquake

I remember many years ago my wife and I were staying at a hotel near the airport because we were flying out in the morning. It was a beautiful hotel with about 25 floors on it and we were on the 20th floor. We had finished packing and were preparing to leave the room when the whole building shook for just a short time.

When we got into the taxi to go to the airport, the driver asked us if we were new in town and we told him yes. He asked how we liked our going away present, the earthquake. He said it registered just over 5.0. I told him it worried us for a short time because of being on the 20th floor. He said that was nothing and almost the average quake. We had been in LA other times with no surprises.

We were just glad to get on the plane and head for our next destination.

We were in Niigata, Japan in 2002 when a 6.3 earthquake hit. It was just before 7 in the evening that was beautiful and we were just leaving the restaurant when we started to look like a bunch of staggering drunks.

I told the waiter (sumimasen) the people at the tables need a seatbelt. He thought it was funny. There restaurants over there are incredible. At least the ones that have been updated or are new. I thought the electronic menu that you order from was interesting.

A 5.2 in Kern County with several aftershocks. Didn't feel it here, was in bed asleep.
Would this be near "Grapevine, CA", @Nathan ? There are more than 40 listed for Grapevine on the usgs page for just the last few hours... along with a couple of other CA locations... Walker, Maricopa, Dustin Acres, Lamont, Mettler. I take it those are all places on the same faultline?

The San Andreas fault runs N and S and is parallel to the I-5 freeway, of which The Grapevine is a section, just into Kern County. The news this morning showed a big boulder that had rolled onto the freeway, presumably due to the quake.

The San Andreas fault runs right through our local community, which is about 2 hours South from last night's 5.2.

A 5.2 certainly catches your notice, but in a country with decent, sturdy housing it usually isn't that deadly. When I lived near Seattle, I was out walking on the street when we had a 6.1. (Don't remember the number exactly, but it was a 6-something.) It got in all the national newspapers. No houses fell down, lots of stuff fell off shelves, probably some minor damage occurred, but nothing drastically awful.

Although for an elderly or disabled person with poor balance, I guess that could be pretty bad. It's hard enough to remain upright normally, let alone with the ground shaking beneath you.

Don't worry, your pets and livestock will let you know.

Did you feel the L.A. quake yesterday Nathan? A friend of mine lives about nine miles outside of L.A. and she felt it. So did some of her FB friends who live in Cali. They said it felt like a stronger magnitude than what was reported. I hope you and yours are alright.
