It's because of our age. The young are immature, ruthless, moralistic, ambitious, judgmental. The elderly are more laid back, understanding.
EDIT: They've learned that life is short and should be enjoyed.

why do our kids think they have to take over running the families - no formal requests are usually made? - is it just genetics?
