Those were my concerns, too - along with the smell.
It doesn't seem to be oily or greasy. After a few minutes, it's not very noticeable. And the weird smell disappears after 30 minutes, but it keeps repelling insects for many hours.

Anyone who spends time outdoor, during this time of year, is well advised to apply insect repellent containing "Deet". I'm outdoors nearly every day, weather permitting, and I Always try to remember to spray my arms and legs with bug spray. If I forget, I usually spend the next 3 or 4 days itching and scratching. I had West Nile Virus about 10 years ago, and was sick for 2 weeks. I can testify that these mosquito-borne illnesses are nothing to take lightly. Avoid the nasty little buggers at all costs!
